Default BIG HORNET'S MAIDEN FLIGHT

Flew the big bird today. Had an excellent flight with everything going very well. This project has taken all of two years to finish, but the time and effort were well worth it. The big CJM bird lifted off with power to spare from a Jet Central Rhino. Many thanks to Century Jet Models, Jet Central, Horizon Hobby, ElectroDynamics, Great Northern Models, Troy Built Models, and my many friends for their support in the completion of this project. The bird groves and performs very well. The SPECIAL RHINO really hauls. It has amazing power that makes the 18 perform really well. Will do more test flying next week, and hopefully post some in flight pictures. Some of the Specifications are 107 length, 80 wingspan, 51 pounds dry, 14 servos, JR 2.4 guidance, and Rhino power. Here are some pictures with a video to be posted later (when I find out how to do it (LOL).

What is the "special" between normal Rhino and special Rhino? I fine the compressor wheel of this Rhino seems be made by CNC machine. How much thrust this Rhino rate? I don't believe that 35Lb normal Rhino can handle a 51Lb scale fighter well.

I haven't put a scale on it yet, but everyone there today said it's 45 pounds or better (119,500 rpm's). It's a very fast airplane!!!

What is 45 lbs? The plane or the thrust from the " special Rhino".

Lewis:

Congratulations on a great maiden flight and indeed a great day. You worked long and hard to make this day the great day it is.

The latest evolution of our powerful Rhino has performed as we told you it would. Our decision to change from cast to CNC machined compressor assemblies for the Rhino turbine was indeed, the right one. As you have experienced, performance is enchanced and exceeds our expectations by a wide margin. We also share your excitement and enhusiasm. Lewis Patton, Jet Central Micro Turbines, Century Jet Models, JR etc. are all winning companies making this indeed a winning "Team."

We are proud and pleased to announce all performance enhancing improvements which Lewis experienced. are now standard with every Rhino produced. Jet Central Micro Turbines. . .always working for you, our customer.

Again Lewis, we congratulate you on your latest accomplishment.

Kindest personal regards,
Eric Clapp

This is a good news, but what I concern is "how much thrust?". I can't use a more powerful new Rhino with my another old Rhino in a twin turbines project.[:@] It will be an always "right turn" or "left turn" plane.

Likai:

All Rhino's are produced to reach 36lb of thrust at our testing level of 6000' ASL. Some reach this thrust at less than our Maximum RPM setting of 118,000. Lewis' Rhino tested at 6000' ASL put out just over 37lb of thrust at 118000 measured RPM so at sea level, given the same or close to the same temp and humidity, is putting out slightly more.

Not to worry about twin operation. We can and will assist you with setting up two turbines to run "matched" for your twin when you are ready. When you are ready for the second Rhino, send me your current Rhino serial number. We will set parameters to these specification. You can also send us your Rhino, ECU and fuel pump and we will at -0- charge, set up two to be run together. Your only cost will be shipping. Please allow 10 days for return to you. This will insure a perfectly matched pair.

Best regards,
Eric Clapp

Hi Eric
Thanks for your help. I was just confirmed by JetCentral Taiwan Dealer that my Rhino already on the way. I will do some bench test in my thrust measurement rig to find out difference between these two Rhino, if they are not good matched, I'll consider send them back for fine tune.

Thanks Ben...it was adjusted down to 45 pounds prior to flight (117,000). Flew 1/2 to 3/4 power for the flight, plenty of reserve power.

Now, I'm totally confused by the thrust of this "special rhino"[sm=bananahead.gif]. Is it 36 or 45Lb? It is a big difference.[sm=confused.gif]

It's around 45. It's a Rino, but one with a serious ATTITUDE. Had been more at 119.500, but was adjusted to 117,000 for flight. Still had more than enough power for the flight. I too was amazed , that so much power could come from such a small package! If remaining test flights for the next few weeks go as well as saturday, it will be flown at the Lake Wales International Jet Rally.

So Lewis, are you saying this Rhino is like an "SE" edition? Is it available now or did Jet Central do something special to just your engine. Lets lift the curtain here.

This version can be had by anyone, I was just fortunate to have an immediate need for the first one. This bird is a big boy, and needed big reliable power.

That's excellent news! I just purchased an Eagle and will purchase one of these "special" Rhino's for my Tam's F-18. That's the kind of power these Hornets need to mimic their big brothers! Thanks for posting the info and congrats on your maiden!

Here are a few short flight videos. This is one large jet, and the Artes Rhino sure looks like it is up to the task.
