Default Da 50 Prop Question

Question: I have my first DA 50 and am the only person at my field with one. It runs well on the ground but in the air it does not open up and is very ruff sounding as in slow throttle response and not a constant hum but more broken up. I am still in the break in period about 1gal in it so far. I am running a XOAR 22X8 BCH. It was sergested that a shallower pitch may help for the break in so I am trying a 22x6 tomorrow. Please if you have any ideas please feel free to tell me. Thank you

22x8 is fine for break in..

Sounds like you low end is fat... Have you tuned the engine at all?

DA 50s are known for a midrange burble.. you can tune most of it out but most don't get it gone completely. The best thing to do is to take your time and tune it properly.. fly it.. fine tune again.. fly it.. fine tune again.

I have tuned it but have not tried tuning it at the field. It is very difficult to tune because of the cowl. I will remove the cowl for tomorrow’s flight. I also noticed that the bottom of the airplane is getting a lot of black residue on it from the exhaust. The low end might be a bit too rich. Thanks

Do not tune it too much until it is run in. About right is OK. The black goo is a sign that it is not run in yet. When it changes to less black or honey color, fine tune the engine, and change to the final mix ratio you intend to use.

Britton,

I flew my DA50 the first couple flights with the factory settings and received 'I did not know DA made a four stroke' comments from the guys at the field. I leaned the low speed needle about 1/2 turn and the engine smoothed out and sounds great and has a ton more power. No more four stroke gurgling. That is probably the ruff sound you are hearing on yours.

Check out [link=http://tech.flygsw.org/walbro_tuneup.htm]Walbro Carb TUNE UP & Illustrated Guide[/link] for a methodical approach to setting the needles. Then do as DA recommends and made it 'slightly rich'. Whatever that is.

Oh, I forgot. Do not change the prop. A 22 x 8 is correct.

I would leave the cowling off and lean the low needle an eighth of a turn at a time. It will run way better. The low RPM's will smooth out and the transition will be faster. Also high RPM's will increase as you lean the low needle. Leave the high needle at factory setting and only lean the low. Always worked great on my DA50.
