If you are planning on getting a DL 50cc engine then plan on buying a new muffler within a few weeks... I have 2 of these and the exhaust rips off on the top of the stack right at the canister due to poor welds (that Leak) and too thin of material. There is no support for these engines either as i can write this and no one will respond... But i though i would let everyone know they are good running engines but the exhaust is terrible garbage and i received no help... I bought mine from a claimed U.S dealer on ebay which probably sums it up there.

The older ones were supposed to be real bad. The newer ones are supposed to be better, but another guy in our club just had his stack break off in flight as well. I haven't used mine as I had bought Bisson mufflers with both of my DL's. Even with the cost of a muffler they are still one of the best deals out there on the market and I wouldn't hesitate to buy a third one. Tons of power and great transition.

Super08 is correct, the early models were were not any good, but newer versions were improved. Lot about this on the DL thread. As far as I know, their are only two suppliers in the US, bob at DL usa and another guy in Washington, cant remember the name of his joint off the top of my head, but been to his web site. He does have a video on the dl100 thread running a DL100. I also purchased an after market muffler pitts type wrap around, the one they send with it is kind of gay looking in my opinion.

Mate - what do you expect for your money. The DL engines are fantastic for the price and with the money saved buy yourself a Jtec wrap around pitts muffler - you will still come out way in front.

I, too, had the stinger fly off my DL50 somewhere out in the field. In discussing this with Bob, at DL, things like prop balance and spinner balance can play a huge role in the life of the stinger relative to the vibration induced by the prop and the spinner. That vibration can be amplified by the time it gets to and through the stinger what with the length of the otherwise unsupported stinger.
The weld joints on my original muffler were very rough and obviously welded way too deep into the meat of the muffler for long term strength. The original muffler lasted about 6 flights. The replacement muffler I purchased from DL USA, has a much cleaner weld joint. I trust it will last much longer.
My DL50 is still a good deal. I am satisfied with the response I got from Bob. Did I get a replacement muffler for free? No. Did I expect one? No. Would I have taken one for free? Sure.
The engine is a good product as many have stated. Stuff just happens sometimes.

The gentleman in Washington State is Tom Denny at Valley View R/C..
We have purchased at least (8) DL50s from Tom and have NEVER had a problem..
Mounting hardware and the back cases were a problem on the very first motors...
That has LONG been taken care of...

Damm...
Guys i'm building my first gasser. Do you think i should give some extra strength to the muffler by getting some aluminium welding on it before running the engine.
Its goona take a long time to get a new muffler if this one breaks apart.

Ok Guys thanks for the feedback. Right now i just put on a Silent beauty (straight) muffler from TBM. I will let you know how it goes. I did balance my props very good on the original 2 exhausts of which the second that broke was purchased this march and broke also. Both of them not only broke but were welded so poorly i had to put Loctite weld on 4 or five spots around the stack cause it leaked.... I do still love the motor for the price and performance, I only wanted to let everyone know that it is an issue or something to consider when buying one. Anyone else that has the same experience please post. This thread will hopefully not badmouth the DL-50 but bring a revision to the exhaust.... Thanks, kenny.....

I bought a new DL from DL USA. It is the latest version. The muffler has a small hole in the weld on one stack. I fixed it with JB Weld for now. I expect I will have to replace it. I think I will need something quieter anyway.

Thats how i patched my stock exhaust with the holes. I got about 22 flights before mine broke ... I flew 4 times today with no problems out of the TBM silent beauty muffler... They are as loud or louder than the stock muffler. The only thing that will be quieter than either of them would be a silent beauty pitts, without spending the money on a canister if you dont have a disposable in come or 2 hobbies like i do. I would think for strength the stack muffler on TBM that says johnson seems to have the biggest welds. So far Iam happy with the Silent beauty stack muffler but dont expect any decibal drop, even the guy at TBM said they arent much quieter. I would recommend the pitts as it sends the exhaust down more paths before it exits...

Before firing it up, I welded a triangluar gusset where the stinger mounts to the muffler..It's on the can side, and about 3/4X3/4".
also, slipping a short length of blue exhaust tubing over the stinger end absorbs exhausts harmonics...

Hello,
I also have to admit the low quality of the original muffler. I was lucky enough the have the first one replace by bob. However after the second broke I went an other route and buy it from a well known brand. Twice the price, much more heavier but stronger!!!
The original one is only 35 $ but still too expensive for what it last.
