I fly rc helicopters and my son wants to get into rc cars. I have a bunch of 11.1V lipos that are 2200mh 20c. I was wondering how they would work in the Slash truck that I was looking at for him. I figure I already have chargers and batts and it only cost about $150 to transfer it to a brushless setup (If i am not mistaken.) Also it the Slash a good truck to start out with? Just basically looking for feed back because I don't really know that much about cars.

The slash is a good truck for all levels of ability. They are raced in a definitive class at rc tracks around the world. If you are going to get one and add a brushless system, i would suggest the Velineon VXL system............the motor is top notch and the esc is about average. If you want the "best" system, you should go with the VXL motor and get a sidewinder or mamba max esc from castle creations. But..............your 2200 mah 20c lipos will not power it sufficiently, they will make it run but they will get extremely hot quickly as they only can provide 44 amps continuous and the 540 size brushless motors pull 50-75 amps at full throttle........it just wouldnt be wise. You can get 5000 mah 3s 20c lipos from hobby city for $30 or so.

how old is your son? a slash on 3s will be crazy fast, and VERY hard to control at all. Brushless on 2S is fast too! but much more manageable.

The Slash is a great choice for a first vehicle IMO. They are very durable and forgiving to drive. The lipos you mentioned might work if the dimensions fit the battery compartment. Keep in mind that you won't see much runtime from the Velineon system (it's a 10 turn brushless system that puts out big time power) on 2200mah capacity batteries. It's best to run around 4000-5000mah to get a decent amount of minutes. You might see around 8 minutes or so from a 2200 pack that's only rated at 20C. That will depend on how hard on the throttle you are. Another thing to consider is that 11.1V in a 2wd 1/10 scale truck makes it extremely hard to drive. It's almost useless unless you're just doing speed runs on the street. A 2 cell lipo is what most people feel delivers the right combination of speed and power. 3s lipos are really over the top. This would be especially pertinent in your case being that it will be a first vehicle in the hands of a youth. Perhaps you could dismantle a couple of 3s lipos to make three 2s packs? I guess that depends on how confident you are in the handling of lithium based batteries. To be completely honest with you, I'd leave the Slash stock and pick up an extra 4000mah or larger 6 cell Nimh battery to get your son used to his first R/C before considering a brushless system. Most of the new Slash trucks are coming complete with a 7 cell Traxxas battery to get you started. A stock Slash on 6 cell Nimh has more than enough power and speed for a first time driver. Anyway, I didn't mean to ramble and I hope some of this reply makes at least a little sense. Good luck, and it's great to see another young person interested in R/C cars.

It's a good basher, but I think that you're going a bit overboard with that description.

+1 slash
an as someone else mention i would stick with the stock first an have your kid run it to the ground first while learning how to drive. then after your kid has gotten better put a brushless system in it. just remember the faster you go the harder you hit.

You can get the slash vxl which has the bl system in it. You can program the esc to go only to 50% throttle until he can handle the speed. The slash is very durable. When I first got mine it spent a lot of time on its lid sliding down the street and doing cartwheels. Not one thing broke yet and it is still bone stock out of the box. Its the most reliable rig I have. It can take a lot of punishment and it is very fast out of the box with a nimh battery that came with it.

Thanks for all the good info. I kind of like the idea of getting the brushless system and dialing it down a bit/ alot. If I do that with my 3s lipos and get him some 2s lipos later. Is there any issues that might arize from that plan? I dont want to drop 300 or so on something that I am going to mess up and he only gets to stair at on my workbench. (Along with some of the helis I have done just that with
)

A stock slash won't work with 3S lipos, it'll fry the motor and ESC. With brushless it'll be going about 40mph on 3S....and it is just manageable to handle on 2S.......
