Check out Team Associated, most of their cars and trucks are offered in kit form as well as RTR.

If you just like to build and don't want a race rig, get something Tamiya. Their kits are a blast to build and parts quality is good as are the instruction manuals. I just built a Kyosho RT5. It is awesome, but pricey. If you really like building and are into scale, check out the Tamiya High Lift. It is pretty sweet. Also pricey, but cool. Check out tamiyausa.com and take a gander at their offerings. If you want a race kit, go Associated, losi, kyosho, hot bodies, durango, Nitro-ofna, mugen, kyosho, jammin, o'donnel, and much more.

Good luck

+1, however Tamiya does make racing RCs as well, the TRF series.

All of the Tamiya kits that I've had were great. The instructions are very easy to follow.

Agree with Mad, for kits Tamiya is king. And yes, they do make competitive 1/10 and 1/8 buggies, not so much on the stadium trucks.

My personal favorites are the DB-01 buggy and Toyota Tundra High Lift Truck.

i have kinda leaned toward a crawler kit, i know this is not the crawler section, but the venom creeper looks really good, and a good price tag for me. any thoughts.

I'm getting the Axial SCX10 Scale Crawler Kit soon, I think it is going to be a fun build. It is going to be my first time building the kit.

For on road there are basically 3 kits you can look at. The TT-01 (D, E, R), TB-02 and TB-03. There are also the shorter wheel base M series but I'm going to ignore those unless they interest you.

The TT-01 is the entry level kit, decent and with some upgrades can become a very good car. The TB-02 and TB-03 have the upgrades already, things like aluminum shaft, oil filled shocks, ball bearings... etc. Based on those three chassis there are a multitude of kits which have different bodies.
