Default Newbie and rigger build

Hey all, im interested in building a rigger hull, 33 inch, single motor/comes w/shaft and prop/rudder
the seller suggests a 540 size BL3674 KV2000 Water cooled motor,i assume as a minumum and not brand specific.
ive read about leopard, atomic and see some others on ebay and such and was wondering what the masses here would suggest, upsizing as long as weight isnt the deterrent, i see motors upto say 2750.
what would be a minimum to maximum motor i should install ?
ill ask about esc and servos next and thanks for any and all suggestions

Hi Wetneck.
It would be better if you could tell us what hull it is. Who is the seller? Is it the JAE 21? A link to the boat would be good?
Also, will a 74mm long motor actually fit under the cowling?
Personally I would go for a bit higher KV, up to maybe 2200kv in a rigger that size, on 4s with an ABC H-2 or H-5 prop.
These aren't a bad budget motor.

These are also a great little powerhouse.

The tough little Turnigy 120A would serve you well. But if you can fit the 180A version in the tub, I'd get that one. It will serve you well for future (bigger) projects.

A bit up scale is the P spec motor most people use for racing in that class

The H-2 prop.

There will be others along soon to offer you various setups. There are many ways to float a boat.

Cheers.
Paul;.

as for the p spec motor, is that at the top of the spectrum? if not what is ?
being new not really sure about all of the specs, really just the kv's.... is there a rpm spec anywhere listed ?

kV is short for '1000 rpm per Volt' a 2200kV motor on an 11.1V battery will spin at 2200 x 11.1 = 24420rpm. The same motor on a 7.4V battery is 2200 x 7.4 = 16280 rpm. Well, it's supposed to anyway.

Cool.
But you might want to read through this before you commit yourself to buying it. It needs a bit of work to make it tough enough to handle a powerful motor.

I'm going to be trying the AQ 2030kv motor in mine tomorrow. I'll let you know how she goes.

Possibly, one of the fastest riggers you will get is the JAE21 E. Put that Gold AQ 2030kv motor in it with a 120A ESC. & you will have a good 50mph + boat. Also comes pre built for some extra cash but with both versions you will need to buy the hardware kit too.

Wetneck.
Here's a bit of a video at our Boondall club where we do a bit of testing & fun running for our race club at a different lake.
The riggers start about the middle of the video. Mine's the yellow one & the white one is Damiens'. We sort of built them up together. The red one is a real H & M Mr Krabbs from which the Tobsd hulls were cloned.
Remember, all of the riggers are running only 1500 kv motors with 45A ESC's
There's even some good shots of my old Sea Predator in there too.

cool video, so if you were to do it all over again , which kit would you run ? the china or the jae ? are there any other bit more larger riggers that might be able to fit a larger motor and another batt ??

i could just go with a cat hull but the riggers just look much more stable

please let us know your results with the new motor... what speeds are you getting now ?

also, what setup is the red mono running ?

Back again.
I would definitely go for the JAE 21FE. Even if you bought the built up version & the hardware kit, it would still be cheaper & you've got 5 times the boat. Having said that, there is one racing at our club &the TOBSD hulls are just as quick with the same restricted (1500kv motor) set ups.
But I would build the kit version because I love building boats from wood. I had a kit & hardware package arrive on Thursday, that I ordered for a fellow club member & it is a beautiful piece of work. I had a hard time handing it over to him.
Both hulls will accept a 3674 motor or a 4074 motor but the latter will be a tight squeeze in the TOBSD hull.

A miserable drizzly day today, but we still ran some boats. A bit of rain doesn't stop the 'Wet Track Racing' team.
The AQ2030 motor gave the boat a bit more speed over the 1500kvmotor, but not as much as I expected. Tried a range of props from an M440/3 to a V937/3, M445, M645, & an ABC H-7.
I think the ESC that I threw in the boat was holding it up. It was a cheap one out of an old RTR boat. I'll try a T120A next time. But I have to put the 1500kv motor & 45A ESC back in for next weekends race meeting.

I'm not sure what Ray was running in the red boat on that day. I'll ask him & let you know. Ain't she a screamer? The little lake there at Boondal is a bit small for that class of boat. It's known as the 'Boondall Bull Ring'. Those rocks on the far side have claimed many a boat. You probably noticed that he very rarely got it to full throttle.

Well I've got to go & put a coat of epoxy sealer on the GP400 hydro. I've got to get it painted befor the State titles next month.
Cheers.
Paul.

so the 4074 is the largest acceptable motor, how much room is left for batts / or max batt size ?
id love to run 2 in series... think its possible to fit them in a sponson or would that move too much weight forward ???

A 5000mah 45c pack will still fit in the Poseidon. Not sure about the JAE21FE. But I'd guess it would.

The packs won't go in the sponsons Just the tub.

heres a link to a sold poseidon in which the owner ran 2 batts up front:

http://orlando.craigslist.org/boa/3772121755.html

and... anyone have any info on this unit ? any good, durability etc ??

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI...ectorid=229466

also.... this old wing ding... interesting shape, old technology, will this hull be quite heavy ??

another newbie question.. what is the difference in hulls, gas nitro and electric ?? motor placement ? shaft placement/length ??
for ex, this above has a fuel motor, why couldnt someone put electrics in this, as long as weight was proportionate?

thanks again... im learning...slowly
