Rudder?
This is my actual rudder:
http://www.rcpics.net/view_single.php?medid=39163
I was thinking of making my own, herewith I mean of cutting the plastic part, and putting an aluminium one....
Now THE question:
1. is it worth the trouble(s)...well I already began
2. if making a new rudder....should I make it "foil" style..using NACA? or just simple
3. size? same, smaller, longer
Thanks

RE: Rudder?
Hi Wis!
Regards, Jan.
Now THE question:

Yes, replacing a flexing plastic blade with a rigid one pays off
2. if making a new rudder....should I make it "foil" style..using NACA? or just simple
A foilshaped rudder will have a lot of drag on a FE, even resulting in loss of steering at full speed, a wedge shape is the way to go.
3. size? same, smaller, longer
If the current size works good, don't make it larger, you'll add more drag.
See if you can find a wedgeshaped knife, that has the proportions you need and make a rudderblade out of it, works great on my boats.
They are thinner than the aluminum ones, ergo, less drag. (one of the reasons I got to be Dutch champion Mono 1 this year...)

RE: Rudder?
Hi Wis,
Simple is often the best...
Joerg M., one of the world fastest SAW boaters, uses them too, he even uses his spare rudderblade to cut his food when he's at an event, so your wife does not have to worry that the knife will go to waste...
Regards, Jan.

and heres another from the actual inside....I installed a Deans antenna
Thx for all

Ps: sorry no vid this time...I was alone and it was really cold...next time, but it works, the rudder is longer BUT it has the same area as the original one, thinner also

RE: Rudder?
Nice work, and easy to make, told you so....
Can you tell if it makes a difference in steering response?
On my surface driven boats I usually don't use the curved end, as you did, because the smaller surface in the water would make a longer blade necessary to counteract the propwalk.
And a longer blade means more drag.
I guess with subsurface this effect is much less.
I have use knife tips as a turning fun though.
Regards, Jan.
From the top:
-Original alu-blade wedge (Hopf)
- small hydro/rigger experiment, too small for my 7-cell mono, it kept spinning out.
- current mono 1 blade, semi wedge, 1mm trailing edge.
As the steel blades are too hard to drill a hole, I either use the one that exist after I take the handle off, or heat it cherry red and cool it down rapidly, so I can drill the hole, tempering it again afterwards, so it won't bend under stress.
