Default Amp rating on ESC

With my complete ignorance in the theories of electricity blooming for all to see, what would the formula be for figuring out if if I have more amps than my ESC is rated for? I am currently (no pun intended) running a 700SS1 on 14 3700MaH NiMH cells, through a Jeti 600 Navy ESC rated at 60 amps. I have had no issues with this setup, however, I would like to be able to explain to myself how to know the correct means of figuring amperage draw.
Please keep your answers civil, and understandable, as I might want to actually comprehend the theory. Also, if you can't take the time to actually spell out your thoughts and puncuate your response, please don't respond, as I grew up in a time when these were necessary qualities where writing is concerned, and I expect to be able to read what is written, and not to have to decipher some sort of code that a 3rd grader wrote.
Many thanks,
Duck
