Default New Kyosho Sunstorm Brushless with new Video (Rebuilt)

Well I took everyones advice and decided to put my little brushless motor in a smaller hull.

But the only small hull I had left was my old 22" Kyosho Sunstorm ebay clone.
Unlike the Kyosho Sunstorm Wheelnut converted to brushless this hull has a good flatspot at on the bottom of the boat as you can see from the pic
So I spent the day converting it from a sub surface drive to a surface drive.
I put a 35mm prop on it and ran it off 12 cells. After a few teething problems with water getting in I have finally got it all worked out and it seems to run quite well.
I will put a video up tomorrow.

The only issue im having is that the 35mm Prop has a very small pitch, i tried a 30mm prop with a bigger pitch but it was too small to get the boat up to speed also i think it might be a subsurface prop, anyone have any ideas on the best prop for this boat and config?

Please tell me, that aint the Stock Electrics in the Black box??
I have a Hull like that only mine is the Vector steered model..

I found the Hull cavitated Badly and Needed a bit of weight in the Front just ontop of the electrics Box

No Its a 60 amp brushless ESC with a custom water cooled heatsink. (Made from a motherboard heatsink). I have it in a small plastic box so if water does get in it wont splash on the esc and kill it.
Yeah i have had to place the 2 batteries besides the motor in order to move the center of balance to about 35% from the transom. Any further back and the whole boat will bounce when I floor it.

that would be impossible.
i dont think a ebay boat would have a 2 channel radio with a brushless esc in it . do you!. i mean come on of course it's not.

also . are you running a straight shaft in that . Kinda scary don't you think.

I don't know . who are you thinking of ?

lol
I'm just pointing out a fact. that its scary to run a straight shaft!
brushless motors and straight shaft with a straight coupler. I wouldn't run it . i would be afraid to to.

There is a reason im running a straight shaft, i have gone thru 4 couplers now. Two cheap nylon universal couplers, both shreaded themselves. A graupner carbon fiber universal coupler snapped. And a 4mm flex coupler tore one end off itself.
So hence a straight shaft.
I know what you mean by scary as any movement or misallignment in the shaft will easilly destroy the motor bearings. I have made sure as best i could that everything is perfectly aligned and that there is no movement. As a result it is relativly quiet, no loud buzzing noise resonating thru the entire hull that you normally see with a U-joint.

Still any thoughts on what size prop?

Ok everyone i have just made a video of my Sunstorm clone doing its thing, be honest and tell me what you all think.
I still think a new prop with more pitch will yeild a bit more speed.

http://www.rcuvideos.com/view_video....b5be647f1cbae6

From the video i worked out the boat is doing about 38Kph or about 24Mph for the non metric people out there.

Not for me

Can I suggest an Upload to either Pufile, Youtube or Zippy Video's?

Cause the RCU player is not exactly High performance or user friendly

Well good news and very very bad news.. I went and got a 35 mm prop with alot more pitch and tried it out this morning. I'd say speed would probably be about 30mph. It was at this point about 60m from shore that a gust of wind hit the boat front on and caused it to barrel roll is a very spectacuar fashion at least 4 good somersaults before landing the right way up. Boy was i relived untill i noticed that the batteries had come loose and were both on the one side causing the boat to dip its back under the water.
It sunk 20 sec later, the foam in the nose was enough to keep the top 10 cm of the boat abover water. About 10 sec after that the water got into the esc and alot of smokepuffed out the top with a definate electrical smell. I was forced to swim out to retrieve it.
I have since recovered what i can i think i might be able to recover the servo, reciver, batteries, maybe the motor and i will have to air the hull out to get rid of that horible electrical smell, but the ESC is fried.

Does anyone think i should buy another ESC and try it with my motor or do you think the motor will also be dead?

If you can spin the Motor freely then it Might just need a Clean out and relube but if it has seized thats not good...

I'm sorry for you loss. But one of the worst thing to do in this situation is to swim. That was very foolish.
Its not worth a boat to swim out in water that you don't know.

I have learned that to clean out the burned electrical smell, wipe it down with rubbing alcohal, that will get rid of it.
