SV27 Batteries
I am going to pick one of these up today, and was wondering about which batteries to get for it. I would assume lipos would be best, and if so what cell count and mah?

RE: SV27 Batteries
The correct Lipo spec for the SV27 would be a pair of 2S2P packs. I'd say smething in or around the 3700-5000 mah capacity would be very good. Don't forget to p/u a low voltage cutoff to install in the boat to protect your Lipo's.

2s2p total. Each pack should be 2s1p. I use 3800mah 20c packs which is all you need but you can go largei in lipos and still be lighter than nimh.

RE: SV27 Batteries
Actually for my river I want to keep the speed stock of slower. I was thinking I could get away with generic batts and keep it at 12 cells or less. I'd also like a stock prop or one that gets up quick , but has limited top speed. Hopefully the current draw will be a bit easier on the cheap batts and my run-time will be nice.

I got these on ebay. Haven't used them yet (due to single digit weather) but seemed like a good deal for 3500's. (anybody have experinece with these that can chime in?)
It's pretty easy to get a prop that's good out of the hole if you aren't worried about top speed. There are guys who have found some good compromises. I'd read the SV27 prop thread and decide what to do. You may want to go carbon fiber if you aren't worried about extreme top end. The come pretty cheap.
Curious what the conditions are that you want to slow down. Be careful. These can flip in stock trim and if the current is quick you could find yourself in a pickle.

RE: SV27 Batteries
I'm on the Black river and I wanted to use cheap batts (mine are real similar to those you linked) because I can lose my boat easily and have no way to retrieve it. I run my 8 cell Hammer on it and I can run WOT most all the way except for turning so I thik the 27 will be plenty fast in stock trim. I also run risk of hitting rocks at times and may be bette with a metal prop or plastic? IDK, I've broken a lot of plasic ones on the Hammer. The nice thing is the 27 sets only about 1/4-1/2" deeper than my heavy hammer.

RE: SV27 Batteries
Guver,
Remember, with cheapos you may get a burnt cell and then fry a pack while on the river. Of course, you could still fry a matched top quality pack too, but far less likely. This boat loves the amps, and as long as there their, the packs are going to get abused by the motor/esc, so you might be better off with better packs. Not to say Radio Shack's won't be any better.
As far as a replacement prop.....if you're running on a river and it's somewhat strong, I wouldn't use the stock 40mm prop because it won't react quick enough to your input in a pickle. Maybe try some CF (carbon fiber) props like Dayton recommended. The CF45 should be perfect for what you're looking for......great handling, will launch you with 0 cav and still take it easy on the batts with temps in the 120Fs, provided she's setup correct. If you run her too wet, the temps on the packs will climb to 130s with this prop. Either way, every boat is different, so if you run the CF45, first get your own baseline temps to verify your setup.
If you can find some CF42 through MHZusa or OE, you might get slightly longer run times.

I would also recommend getting a fairly quick rescue boat like Zig Zag or Reef Racer (better from the threads I've read) to retireve your ($300+) investment. If the shore-to-shore distance isn't too great, maybe run a makeshift net/flourescent masonry/fishline line downstream across the water and put a 4 way hook on the top of your antenna to catch it.
Look here for some batt ideas too.

RE: SV27 Batteries
Forgot.......the CF45 will give you about 32-34mph. If the CF42 from MHZ is for a 3/16" (I think they have a typo) you should get about 27-29mph. I haven't tested this prop or gone this lw in dia......but it's only $5.50 to try.

Also, if you go with cheaper packs, to keep them maintained and to keep the cell temps down, I recommend keeping them balanced as much as possible by maybe doing a c/10 charge every other week vice monthly with better packs. And definitely run them right off the charger as this will keep the temps down too during the run.

RE: SV27 Batteries
Thanks for all that info. I do have some reef racers to mess with. I'm pretty good with cheap batts and maybe I will get some of those props each size to try out.

Guver,
Didn't even realize that you were also in Ohio when I asked about the river. I don't know the Black river. But grew up in Massillon not so far away. Good luck with your boat.

RE: SV27 Batteries
Either will work. You will have to knock out the front battery tray bars to fit flat packs, that is what I would do and use flat 7 cell packs. You'll benefit from the bit of extra weight being forward as it WILL go a good bit faster. Try that setup w/a X645.

RE: SV27 Batteries
Thank you, here are the batteries I found. If you look down the page they sell 2 packs or 2 packs with a charger or sigle packs. I figure they have to be good enough for what I want to do.. tell me what you all think, if there good batteries and how about the charger. I would have got the 6 cell packs but they dont have them in 4500"s yet.

RE: SV27 Batteries
That charger wil take 2 1/2 hours to charge a 4500 mah pack. does it charge two packs at once? If not, that's two packs charged in roughly 5 hours.

Ice,
I highly recommend getting rid of those Tamiya plugs and soldering some Deans plugs on those packs. You'll need it when you start pulling those amps.
