Default Doc! I've found the problem! (oops)

So I got a new pair of GP 3300's and I was excited.. Time to repalce the old NiCd's 750?'s.. So I charged em up according tothe forming process then I finally had a chance to run it in my villain today! WOW! What an difference! Effortless speed (despite some cavitation, and some slight porposing) great spin outs!

So I proceed to run it for 15 minutes out of sheer excitement.. I forget to bring it in after 5 minutes or so to check the temps.. The old NiCd's usually lost its juice by then (5 mins)..

So realizing this (15 minutes later) I do a final spin out in the pond then.. *GRIND* .. ***... sudden drop in speed and horrible sounds.. yikes... Limped it back to me and then I opened it up.. It looked a bit funny then I realized something..! The motor mounts have melted and sagged and twisted due to the forces of the motor!

I whip out the thermo and measure an whopping.. 230F! Oboy oboy.. Battery was at a balmy 80F.. Methinks something was binding there a little bit. The ESC was smokin' hot too, I'm surprised it didnt melt as well. I'm pretty sure the motor and ESC wont last much longer, It doesn't matter because I'm gutting it now.

I guess I have my hull for the build that I'm considering!

What crappy motor mounts would be plastic anyway. I say good riddins and get some new ones

you know what, I had this happen as well, not as badly, but my mounts got soft and ended up making the gears slip, grinding the gears down to nothing. Looks like a great opportunity to switch to direct drive. or just buy new mounts and gears.

Sucks man, have you lit your villain on fire yet, you've got to join the club, nothing like smoke pouring out through the hatch from an electric boat.

Whatever you do, dont try salvaging the mounts, chuck em, even if it looks ok, your gears will not mesh properly.

Yeah I've been looking but not much luck. I noticed this though, that the EX mounts have a metal plate behind it.. Still plastic mounts though, I think I need a "gearbox" type of setup and I really havent been able to find one.

Just to report that I've gotten all of the parts in and the new mounts have an AL backing plate and are CF.. beefy. Added h20 cooling, or will do that soon. Still waiting for the coils to come in. I will make a thread then.

Hate to say it, but since the ESC was sort of 'warm' too, you might think about either cooling it (more plumbing?) or increasing the size. 'Nasty' thought, huh?

When you cool the motor it will run more efficiently and that may be enough to make the esc run cooler. Try it first then you will know.

I will. I have already drilled a hold through the heat sink on the ESC and put a copper pipe through and they will be the first in line to be cooled then the motors.. when the damned kit comes in.. arg. I will have twin pickups, so each motor will get its input and output.

I'm not sure thats the best ideas. on many esc's it says don't let the cooling fins touch. putting a cooper tube thruogh seems to be leeting them touch.

theres more to it than that though. it's something were the fins attach to that can't touch, but it's still completing the cricut with the pipe

Yea well, the fins are already touching as seeing it's a solid unit that's just bolted to the tabs.. So, I think they'd be touching anyway? :-p Ill get a pic up soon.

here's what it says on the novak site.

ALWAYS USE ESC HEAT SINKS
Heat sinks are factory-installed on your HV-Maxx ESC and MUST be
used for maximum cooling and performance––Never allow separate
heat sinks to touch each other or any exposed metal or conductive
surface, as this will cause a short circuit & damage ESC.

the individual fins don't matter but if two banks of the sinks touch it's bad

Yea great clarifying post there. It's not set up like that, it's a pipe through each individual heat sink. It's not touching each other.

I must say that this is pretty stupid on Traxxes's part. That means if the boat takes on enough water to come in contact with the esc then it will short out. I personally think that all boat esc's should be water proof. DUH

you would think wouldn't you.

with the age of that model it's amazing it's an esc and not an msc
