Default Maximum prop setback?

I understand that the prop is generally placed @10% of the boat length aft of the transom. How far back can I safely place the prop and still have a boat without any bad habits.

I’m going to build a wire drive, but I’ll need a little space aft of the transom to do a gentle bend.

Any suggestions welcome

You can go to 12 - 13% without negative consequenses, if you extend the shaft beyond that, the turning will suffer, as the boat will want to go straight.

Having said that, my nex build, a 45 cm monohull will have the shaft sticking out aprox 15%...

Regards, Jan.

Rex R on RC Groups,

I bounce around .....

Wire drive is in and no apparent binding ..... It was a Friday night special so I got 0 degrees shaft angle but the shaft height is a bit high.

prop setback. Pompbled is correct. Also John Finch of which of you don't know who he is and has a 4 page document on setups and etc. John says 3 to 4" max and you'll know when it is too long is when it starts hopping coming out of turns. I tried it and he was right on the nose.
