try using just a reciever pack and servo to see if your esc is bad. on a lot of newer esc's the plug can go in two ways so make sure thats right

Try turning the Throttle trim down, even to a negative 60% or so and then try to arm it. Thats what I have to do with my JR radio sometimes.

I'm not sure about what you are trying to do exactly. If you're swapping out Futaba for the original electronics that came with the boat, then that's one thing. If you're trying to 'mix' Futaba with some of the original electronics, then that's something else altogether and it may not be compatible (different controls on different 'sticks' sort of thingy). {And the way this day has gone, I may be misunderstanding the whole thing!}

He pulled out the stock AM radio, and installed his Futaba FM. (same stock ESC, same stock servo)

I changed the stock radio for a Futaba FM radio in my Profisherman. I was never able to get the stock ESC to communicate with the new radio no matter what I did or adjusted. The solution was to replace the stock ESC. I got a Proboat model and it armed right away without any problems. I know others that had the same problem and ended up replacing the ESC as well.

The glitching your experiencing with the stock radio will improve significantly with the FM radio but won't be eliminated completely. The glitching is a problem with the bass boat itself - I think the antenna wire is to close to the motor and picking up interference from it.
