Default hydro strut surface drive and at sponson line?

Hello Everyone
I'm getting a little confused here. I've been hearing about people saying that the strut in a hydro is always used as a surface drive. But then I hear some say that the strut should be lined up with the bottom line of the sponson. Which one should I use for my hydro?
