Default Traxxas EVX2

Hi all,
Ihave a Villian ex and a stupid question....What is the fastest brushed motor I can run on the stock Traxxas EVX2 esc? Ok so I had two stupid questions....will this ESC run non sensored Brushless motors on 14v of NiMh? forget question 2 is not three phase esc. There is very limited info on this esc...

You can run 550's down to 12 turns. It cant run brushless motors. Here's a nice upgrade motor...............try it on 14 cells(16.8) it should run nicely.

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXWR56&P=7

Heres the one with the most power and top end, this on 14 cells is all your gonna get out of a villain.

Oh, the 12-17t motors must have traxxas connectors................NOT molex/tamiya [:'(]

you are going to have trouble with any brushed motor other then the stock ones.
Read through the Villian section on here and you will see that this boat is very hard on aftermarket motors they just can't take the heat.

He will certainly have to water cool it and can go to 12/28 or 13/28 reduction if necessary and still gain speed.

I already have it water cooled.....so no issue there, what I want is torque and top end rpm, without breaking the bank or being stuck with Titan motors. The motor voltage (14)to be the issue if I want a dendable fast boat.

Did you look at the second motor I posted? In a 550 size motor it's probably the best option for you...................

Nice motor....but at that price getting 2 of them might as well consider going brushless and changing every thing......

For a less expensive speed, here is a vid of a guy running stock 550 brushed motors, 14 cells (16.8v), and 17/28 gearing. He it 23.9 mph.............thats cookin for a brushed villain. His first run is with 12 cells, then he changes to 14 and shows his readings at the end.

Respectable speed for a villian.....Motors run cooler if you take the traxxas sleeve off and put cooling coils right on the can.....can't do much about the battery temp. Might just try to re-gear the thing....One thing I don't really understand is why the esc is only rated at 30 amps......

Yeah i agree on the torque sleeves.............i take em off too, it gives a few thousand more rpms and lets the motor cool better IMO. Here are the ratings on the EVX2 esc..............not sure what the 30amp part is either, it shows a "rated" current of 180....?

Input voltage: 6-14 cells (7.2 to 16.8 volts DC)
Case Size: 2.27â€W x 2â€D x 1.05â€H
Weight: 3.6 ounces
Motor Limit (540 size): 10-turns
Motor Limit (550 size): 12-turns
On-Resistance (@Trans)–FWD/REV: 0.004 Ω / 0.004 Ω
Rated Current–FWD/REV: 180 amps / 180 amps
Continuous Current
(@100°F amb.): 30 Amps

Better props help too with speed...........less flex if you go with octura's or similar and they can be finely sharpened. Altogether with the higher gearing, 14 cells, water cooling, torque sleeves off and sharpened and balanced octura props you will basically have all the speed you're gonna get from a villain with stock motors.

JUST OUT OF CURIOSITY......I PLACED A DVM AT THE MOTORS.....I'M ONLY GETTING 10 VOLTS TO THE MOTORS WITH MO LOAD.....4 VOLTS SHY OF WHAT TRAXAX SPECK CALLS FOR.......AS AND EXPEREMENT PLEASE CHECK VOTAGES AT THE MOTOR.....MY CURIOSITY IS PEAKED AT THIS POINT BUT I NEED MORE INFO....WOULD THEY INTENTIONALLY DO THAT AND WHY? MOTORS SAY 14 VOLT....BUT COULD THEY BE RELABELED 9.6 MOTORS..........THIS WOULD CAUSE A BIG SLOW DOWN...... tHIS WAS OF COURSE FRESH 3000NiMh 7.2 PACKS

I'll check mine tomorrow, but it doesnt matter what the motor is rated for...............the ESC will put out what its rated to put out..........it doesnt care what motor is hooked up to it.

But a motor rated for 14v getting 10v is gonna cause a big performance issue.....a 9.6 can would work a lot better......

First thing I thought was possibly the batteries......so I tested them under load, both 3000mah NiMh 6 cell and had no voltage drop to speak of..... Made in China and mass produced, could probably line up ten of them and get different readings on them all Any ideas for a brushed esc capable of running two 550 14v motors? All I can find are brushless.... getting very aggravated with traxxas.....They want me to send the whole boat to Texas, that's not going to happen. New I should have gone with ProBoat!!!!! May stil

I was in mode 1 100% forward and reverse ? training mode should have cut the voltage by half.........

Here is the 19T version of the monster trinity.........................these are twice as good as the titans and are quite a bit faster and more powerful for sure. They are also not $69 dollars like the other one i posted(17T) these are much more reasonable...............i cant make any 100% guarantees......but i think these with the octura x447's sharpened and balanced, water cooling and two seven cell packs would get you going into some nice speeds..............surely as fast as the guy in the vid i posted.

If your other motors are bad here is a "reverse" rotation motor......you need one for your villain as it has counter rotating props The standard motors on an EX are 23T........these are 21T......and the Big trinity's i showed you are 19T:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Traxxas-Titan-55...item3357761b0c

and a standard rotation:

Heres a motor chart from kershaw designs............check out the 650's!

Had a battery pack explode yesterday, on my first pass! made a fast pass near shore to check cooling flow and pow!!!! scared the crap out of me! put in another pair and it ran fine...
I also sent a request to Kershaw about the 650 and my esc... I ordered the 650's a lot of revs for little money......gotta try them.

Im gonna venture a guess that your batteries have possibly been the problem...............especially with the bursting incident. Did you ever check what the esc is putting out without motors connected? Is it 14-16 volts?

Did the boat run well on the fresh batts?

No.... I didn't feel like unsoldering them....Now with the battery issue,I have to fight with Venon for a replacement! battery was less than a month old with about 3 runs on it. It ran fine with another pair installed. Can't wait to see what two 36k rpm motors will do... and at the rated wattage still gives me a little room to play with the gearing

Why not go with two 700s?

The EVX2 wont be able to handle two 700's with the huge constant current draw.............it'll heat up quick and start to cut out.

Yea i am just in dream land.. lol I used a drill trigger and a servo to power two 550s out of two drills with 18 nicd cells before. I didn't have reverse and it was kinda rigged but it only cost me 40 bucks and when twice the speed of the stock villain.
