a brushless motor will probably laugh at your nicads , they are 2 or 3 metal advancements behind. yes you need a new esc to go brushless, should be able to keep the shafts, keeping the prop depends on the new motor

In my boat club we run spec classes in which we run stock Aquacraft SV27 and UL-1 motors or the stock Proboat black jack 26 motors which are cheap for their level of performance. We also run unlimited classes which can use any motor, a high performance low price one are the Feigao motors which come in all sorts of sizes. You will need a new esc specifically for brushless and currently our club runs lipo battery packs. You can get everything you need and learn more at www.offshoreelectrics.com.

also the small capacity of them will not yield very good run times at all
lipo batteries are very easy to charge and maintain

what size is the boat...... this determines the size of motor, batt and esc
is it for fun or competitions
i see your determined to run nicads and as people have pointed out, lipos are much better but if you dont want to go with lipos then theres no point going brushless

Guys are right... first change will be to go Lipo. I can confirm that even a brushed system will go though a noticeable change if you go Lipo. A bit like a new boat, as far as response. Check some of the prices here:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbycity/s..._40C_Lipo_Pack
This will give you loads more power and the price is not that different from a good NiMh pack. BTW, if you login, the prices go down...
My opinion: go Lipo first, get the taste of it, than slowly upgrade. If you run scale boats, there is no real point, as the speed of a brushed system is a lot more scale...
