newb here?!?!
Hi All
I'm new to electric rc's and have a few questions. I just bought a Hobbico Profisherman. I've read what info is available on the motor but there are huge gaps that I hope someone can fill in for me. 1) Can someone tell me the voltage of 1 NiMh, 1 Li, 1Lipoly cell? 2) Can someone tell me a little more a "mAh", what does it meant and what is it's relevence? 3) The prop that comes with the boat is a 1.25"X2.01" That seems kind of big to me. 4) When I upgrade the motor, will I need to get a new esc? Any help would be appreciated. Even if someone has a good link to "need to know" info for beginers. |

ORIGINAL: bubby83 Hi All I'm new to electric rc's and have a few questions. I just bought a Hobbico Profisherman. I've read what info is available on the motor but there are huge gaps that I hope someone can fill in for me. 1) Can someone tell me the voltage of 1 NiMh, 1 Li, 1Lipoly cell? Cell voltage varies on cell size, the most common EP boat uses sub C cells (NiCd or NiMh) which are ~1.2v 2) Can someone tell me a little more a "mAh", what does it meant and what is it's relevence? Milliamp hours....at a given amp draw you will get x time before the cells dump. A 3600mah pack should run exactly twice as long as an 1800mah pack. Mah is like how much fuel you have in your tank. 3) The prop that comes with the boat is a 1.25"X2.01" That seems kind of big to me. Props usually are quoted by the diameter first then the pitch. You have it backwards... I presume so you are talking about a 50mm dia prop with a 1.25 pitch which does seem pretty large for a fast electric but the profisherman is not really a fast electric stock and the motor is probably designed to run at lower rmps and high torque. 4) When I upgrade the motor, will I need to get a new esc? It depends on which motor you get. Do you currently have a "switch" or a real ESC? What motor do you want to put in it and how many cells do you want to run? You have to know this info first. Any help would be appreciated. Even if someone has a good link to "need to know" info for beginers. |
RE: newb here?!?!
The specs show a 32mm OD and a 55mm pitch. As for as the batteries go, doesn't LiPoly batteries have much more running time than a NiMh? I'm kinda lost but I like researching to find the info I need to do things myself, I just can't find the info, that's where you guys come in. I will probably be asking many questions in the next couple of months. BTW what would you guys recomend for mods to this motor? I've been looking at different motors and can't find any with a 3mm shaft. How would I go about solving fitment issues such as this? I don't want to go and spend alot of money on a motor that cannot be installed into my OB. I this boat goes 15mph stock, how fast could I realisticly expect to make it?

RE: newb here?!?!
I replied to this but don't know what happened to my reply, it dissapeared.
Anyway I have the Profisherman. I put a 19 turn quad and a 7 cell nimh battery with out changing the esc and got good results. It is very fast. But remember this boat is not designed to go that fast. Too much speed and I don't think it will stay together. It will deffinetly become unstable. I think the upgrade I have done is about the most you can do to that boat with good results. I would say the top speed with good handling on this boat is about 21 to 24 mph tops. If you want something faster then check out some other boats. |
RE: newb here?!?!
I'm going to put the motor on a tunnel once I get it hopped up.
|
RE: newb here?!?!
I Finnaly got take take it to my parent's pond today. It runs good on 6 cells but I put a 1.65" pitch prop on it and It runs alot better. I think I'm going to order a Graupner 700, a couple 7 cells, and a couple more props for it. I'm sure I'll be putting it on a tunnel soon if I can make the 700 work in it. I have access to a machine shop, so making it work shouldn't be a problem. The only gripe I have is the fact that it doesn't have a very far radio range.
|
RE: newb here?!?!
I think if you put a 700 on that boat it is going to sink. The profisherman was not built for that size motor, didn't you notice how low the rear end sits in the water? but hey give it a shot and let us know what happens and don't forget pictures.:D

RE: newb here?!?!
I went with an Orion 17T Double Method R. I'll wait untill I get my tunnel to get the 700
|
RE: newb here?!?!
I also have this boat and have found the radio range to be a problem. Since it's my first boat I didn't know if this was normal for an RTR or if something was wrong with this particular one. I find it works ok if it's not more than about 80 feet away but beyond this the motor keeps stalling.

RE: newb here?!?!
OK, I tried it out with the new motor and it does n't run any better, and it drains a 24mah battery in about 2 minutes. I know something is wrong but I can't figure out what it is. I have since modified the motor mount and have the centerline of the prop shaft just bellow the bottom of the boat. Part of the prop should be out of the water now so it should be able to turn up alot more. Any suggestions? Could it be something to do with the esc? Out of the water it turns up alot more than the stock motor but under a load it seams to turn about the same. Should I get a smaller prop? I have a 1.65"pitch, how small would I have to go?

RE: newb here?!?!
I went back out to the lake this weekend. I got about 25 mph out of this setup but there's no way to get any more out of that boat. Once it's planed out and running, it's easy to controll but to get it there is a whole different ballgame. On takeoff it wants to stand up or flip, then once it's up it dances on the water with absolutely no controll, once it settles it runs great. for you guys who have one, if you like a tip on getting alot more out of this settup let me know, I can take picks of the motor mount mods I've made.
I think I'm gonna order my tunnel this week. Any ideas on a good hull? I want something that's about 24" long but I'd like to stay away from wood. |
RE: newb here?!?!
Yes since I have this boat I would deffinetly like to see some pics of your set up. Mine currently has a big hole in the front where I hit a wall. I am going to repair it this winter.
Thanks |
RE: newb here?!?!
How did you fix the problems from before? Did you use a smaller prop or one with less pitch? Are the handling problems you mention due to the motor mount mods? Is the run-time better now? Just asking these questions because I've been thinking about modifying mine to get more performance out of it.
|
RE: newb here?!?!
The motor mount mods made all the diference in the world. The runtime is now about the same as the stock setup. Ironicly, after testing a few different props, with the motor lifted so high, it runs best with the stock prop.
The reason for the handling problems is that in order to acheive maximum lift and minimal drag, the thrust angle and motor hight force the boat out of the water on takeoff. As for handling at speed, I think it has alot to do with the fact that the boat it not build to go fast. |
RE: newb here?!?!
I guess with the motor mount mods the prop is running at or near the surface which works with your new motor which revs higher than the stock. I don't think this would work well with the stock as I find it cavitates very easily already without bringing the prop closer to the surface. The motor revs way up and the boat slows down. I find mine (stock version) handles best with the motor trimmed in slightly and a 7 cell pack for additional weight in the front. The trim is just right - riding on the back section of the hull but without hopping. Anyway I think the hull should be able to handle considerable speed provided enough of it is in the water and the water is calm. Maybe more power (i.e. more cells) is the solution although this would likely require changing the ESC and maybe the motor.
Also, I was wondering if anyone had any information on taking the outboard apart to relubricate the gears, shafts, and bearings as suggested in the manual. Someone on another forum strongly discouraged me from doing this saying I would not likely be able to get it back together again. |
RE: newb here?!?!
I had the same trouble when the motor was lower in the water. It still cavitates sometimes but for some reason it seam to not cavitate as much. I'd try it with the stock motor if I were you. I'll post some picks in a minute. You will see that even with the mods, it can still be adjusted back to the highest stock settings, but it if doesn't work, it's reversable. As for tearing it down, it's fairly easy to do. I'll run throught it and post a step by step w/ picks a little later.

RE: newb here?!?!
Any pics yet on the set up??
|
RE: newb here?!?!
Yeah I took a few last night but I didn't get a chance to post them. I'm going get my tunnel today. I'm going to get a TT Falcon if I can figure out where to mount the batttery. If not I'll get either the ABS Dumas 3.5 or the Top Speed II.

RE: newb here?!?!
My host site is not working anyone know of a good free host sight I could use?
|
RE: newb here?!?!
If it is just pictures, you can post them here.
Since you started your thread on EP1-Falcon Tunnel, does that mean we are not going to hear about the profisherman anymore or see the set up pics? |
RE: newb here?!?!
lipo cells are 3.7v per cell and yes you can get a longer run time plus less weight but you will need a good charger and need to take extra good care of your batteries they can explode,no joke, they are awsome for power and run time you just need to be knowlegible about charging and cell care

Here's a couple picks of the old setup

RE: newb here?!?!
I was wondering where you were able to find props for this boat. I've had a difficult time finding any other than the stock one that will fit the shaft which I believe is 3mm.
|
RE: newb here?!?!
all I have tried so far are props off of other Aquacraft Models. Monday, I ordered 4 new octura props for a 1/8" shaft I'll let you know how they fit.
