I feel like crying

I just got back from testing my boat out (not even a week old yet :() and it appeared that it wasn't shooting water out the cooloing outlet at speed, only low speeds- so I pulled it parrallel to shore to do a pass and try to get a better look. Well... The lake I run at has a big square concrete drain with a metal "cage" around the top of it and a swim platform on top. Top of my pass, I look up "OH SH$#"- try to cut a hard right- "smack, crack, scrape" over the top of the concrete wall (about flush with the water)- BETWEEN two bars on the cage and "CRASH" down to the bottom (I think there were a couple of bounces in between too :( )..

Needless to say, I did what any die hard boater would do- I flew home, grabed a bunch of pry bars and a tow strap I have for pulling cars- head back out there, pry the platform up high enough to squeeze myself between the top of the cage and the bottom of the platform- all while leaving a prybar in between the two to hold the platform up while I was under it [X(].... Now that I am under the platform, it is about a 4x5 concrete square hole about 8-10' down, I straddle the top of it while being hunched over under the platform which is only ~ 3' tall from the top of the walls to get my tow strap wrapped around one of the bars of the cages- the whole time having flashbacks to various CSI episodes where they find floaters and people in storm drains- climb down using the strap, grab the boat in one arm and wrap the other wrist in the strap to get a good pull up to get the boat out (of course, you have to save the boat first :) ). I guess it goes without saying that I am still alive- KIDS- DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS AT HOME haha...

Anyway, here are the pics of the boat- it's not "that bad" but my $150 hardware kit is shot to hell and the boat will need to be painted- so much for the pretty yellow gel coat :(. I don't know how to post pics, so they are here- www.joepmbc.com/boatwreck.html

What an adventure....

Thanks guys- yeah, at least I got the boat back. It is repairable easy enough, but then I would have to paint it also and I prefer colored gelcoat over paint. I may just sell the hull- sucks I just paid like $290 for it plus the hardware LAST WEEK! Not to mention the $35 balanced/polished prop :(. If anyone wants the hull, make offers- "like new, has minor scratches" lol.

eyecandy- I'll take more pics of it overall later on and post them. I am glad I was able to get it back and at least get my new motor, esc, batteries, etc. back if nothing else. I'm going to tear the boat down later and see what is left that is reuseable with the hardware. Hopefully it didn't bend the end of the prop shaft also- I would like to be able to reuse SOMETHING haha..

oh yeah- what's "BL"?
Joe

CadillacDTS2001 06-23-2006 09:23 PM

RE: I feel like crying

BL = brushless motor!
its new age slang ! lol

cool , if you dont mind me asking about your brushless motor, what size is it and who makes is for how much

i am in need of a L or XL brushless motor

RE: I feel like crying

It is a Fine Design Nemesis Blue 10XL. I forget the price off the top of my head- but they have them on the site- www.finedesignrc.com. Some people have gripes about dealing with them, but they are local to me and Chris has always been there to answer questions for me, so I would rather pay a couple dollars extra for the service. I have heard that they are identical to the Feigao Nemesis motors, but I have also heard they are slightly better- so who knows.. They are only a few dollars more and for me, it is worth it to drive and pick them up also. I'll tell you though- on 12 3800s and the X438 prop, it will damn near flip the boat on launch :). In my Hydro, it was brutally fast, but going in full speed right circles got boring lol.

I tore the hull down earlier and was able to salvage the rudder and bracket, but need a new motor mount, strut assembly, prop and flax cable- it actually bent the 3/16" shaft pretty good! I also have to fix a few small cracks and crap on the hull, I am going to the paint store tomorrow to get yellow base coat so I can fix and spray it over the weekend :). I need to get the hardware during the week though, Chris is away at a race so I have to wait until at least Tuesday for that. IT WILL BE BACK though lol.

I knew BL was usually brushless, but I think I got confused by the wording since you ended the part about losing it with an "!" then the BL comment came after. Nevermind- I know what I am thinking, just can't explain hah.

how many lbs boost does your z mbc make? sorry to get off topic, and sorry to see your boat cracked up!!

Hah- yeah, a bit OT lol- the XZ has been tested to 30+ psi, the others use the same spring, so will handle the same. The thing is, it is more "how much of an increase over wastegate PSI will the MBC allow"- not really "how much max psi will it allow". If you have a 6 psi gate and are trying to use an MBC to get 30 psi, it may not do it reliably. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at [email protected]. Thanks.

OK- all the damage is repaired on the hull and it should be getting sprayed today :). I'll post "after" pics when it is done. Have to go get new hardware tomorrow :(.

who makes the hull
i want to see the whole thing , how big is it , could you give secs , what run time do you usaly get ?

RE: I feel like crying

It is a Hydro and Marine hull, I thought it was a Drifter S, but looking at the Drifter Pics, it is different. I'll post pics when it is all done. I'll have to measure it to get the specs for you- since it isn't a Drifter, the specs are probably different. Run time is hard to tell since I was having the cooling problems and I think I had my packs too far forward putting too much drag on the boat, making things get too hot and hurting run time. It was still ~4 mins like that though. The day I wrecked it, I moved the packs back about one full length and it made a huge difference in performance, but I wrecked within two minutes, so I never got to time it :(.

with your motor the 10XL and the 12 cells
with deans plugs
here are the props you should run

| MAX speed | max efficency | balance
prop | H3720 | E3714/3 | X438
maker | RRH | RRH | octura
speed | 35mph | 31mph | 31mph
efficncy | 91 % | 93 % | 94%

RE: I feel like crying

I have the X438 on it and it was getting EXTREMELY hot- but I also realized that the boat was too nose heavy, so that probably wasn't helping any. I will tell you, it "looked" a lot faster than the 31mph that shows on your chart :). My hydro was 42 on GPS and this doesn't look 11 mph slower in back to back runs. It may be though, who knows. Thanks for posting that though, it gives me a couple of other options.

Hull is done! Have to pick up the hardware tomorrow and put it back together. The color is a bit off from the original, could not find a perfect match in the books we used, I'm sure if I spent more time looking, I would have found something- but it works. It isn't as far off from the hatch (original finish) as the pic looks, the flash made it look worse.

Pics are on the same page- http://www.joepmbc.com/boatwreck.html

RE: I feel like crying

NICE JOB !
way to go , what did you use wo fix the back ? bondo ?

it looks good , so do you know what hull it is ?

kwiktsi 06-26-2006 07:49 PM

RE: I feel like crying

Thanks :). I ground down the cracks and used fiberglass resin (and cloth where needed) and then went over them with a coat of "Autobody Icing"- it is like a glaze to be used over body work to remove minor imperfections. On the rear where it was missing chunks, I ground it up a bit and used resin to stiffen it again, then used duraglass (like bondo with fiberglass strands in it for reinforcement) to reshape it and then finished it with the Autobody Icing. I also epoxied a piece of ply on the inside of the transom to screw the hardware into so that the repair material wasn't the only thing holding the screws to prevent it from coming apart in use.

As for the hull- I am not sure what model it is, all I know is it is a Hydro and Marine and it is 29"x9" wide. I have tried searching to put a name with it, but can't find it. I know Fine Design gets a lot of stuff from them, so it could even be a hull he was thinking of importing but never did. I'll ask him tomorrow to try to find out for sure. It is a very nice hull, I am happy with it. I was just EXTREMELY disappointed when I smacked it up- especially since it was only about a week old. I am glad it came out as nice as it did- the only thing that really bugs me about the repair is on the side where I fixed the cracks, the seam got filled in also, so the line is smooth in that one area. I was thinking about filling the whole seam, but didn't want to put that much time into the repair- I have two cars here I need to get sprayed still and couldn't put a lot of time into the boat. Figure once it is on the water, you'll never notice it anyway :).

RE: I feel like crying

cool !
in the picture where you can see the motor ( crash pic )
is the motor mounted on a angle or was that the after math of the crash?

kwiktsi 06-26-2006 09:45 PM

RE: I feel like crying

That was the aftermath. The motor mount was broken in the crash.

Also- I was wrong, the motor is a 10L, not XL. it is 2458 kv, the XL is 1668- so I am turning a lot more RPM than originally estimated- that would also explain why I said it looked to be going a lot faster than 31 mph :). This motor was perfect in my Hydro, but may be too "hot" for the size of this hull....

RE: I feel like crying

wow that makes the boats top speed about at about 42.7mph
ut if you go to a 1732 prop made buy octura you will get a extra5 mph but lose run time

kwiktsi 06-27-2006 09:31 AM

RE: I feel like crying

I'd be worried to go bigger since it gets as hot as it does on the X438. Maybe I'll look into it as a prop for making occassional high speed passes :). I was thinking of water cooling the can, but it hits the lid already, no room for even a silicon jacket. Maybe I can mod the mount to drop it a tad. I'll see when I get the new mount for it.
Joe

kwiktsi 06-27-2006 09:33 AM

RE: I feel like crying

Actually, I just looked it up- I didn't realize it was only a 32mm. What is different about it than mine to make it faster with a smaller prop? Pitch? Is it a 3 blade?
Joe

CadillacDTS2001 06-27-2006 09:42 AM

RE: I feel like crying

***Prop Dia Pitch blades Make
x438 1.5 2.1 2 Octura

1732 1.26 2.142 2 Octura

there is the diffrence ! lol hehe
water cooling is good no matter what !
if you can try move your motor back so that the can isnt under the deck try to make it so that the can is under the hatch and if you can swing it get the aluminum tube water cooling cuz the mnetal tranfers heat/cooling better
