SV27 Battery Thread
Title says it all....

RE: SV27 Battery Thread
Is anybody constantly running 7 cells?
|
RE: SV27 Battery Thread
I ran mine on 14 cells for the first 2 weeks (GP3300's) while I was waiting for my IB4200 6-packs. I honestly feel the 12 IB4200's are nearly as fast (no GPS) as the 14 GP3300's. Could be because the GP3300's are older...or because of the extra weight. Not sure.

RE: SV27 Battery Thread
the ib's dischage at a greater rate , so you could be rite , if you run 14 cells of the IB u will see a diffrence

Are the Duratrax BAtteries Any good?

RE: SV27 Battery Thread
I started druleing over the keyboard when i saw these. I was wondering if they are any good but i am sure they are!!!!!

RE: SV27 Battery Thread
Thats where I get my batteries. The batteries I have bought from them has always been great quality. Make sure you use the selections at the bottom of the custom pack link to get the 12awg wire and battery bar upgrade and deans plugs

RE: SV27 Battery Thread
I ran mine on 14 cells. They where cheepo's. The boat was only 2MPH faster than with my GP3300's.
I felt the boat was not as stable. I had the trim tabs WAY down and I still managed to flip it. I had to swim (I know, don't do it) to get it. Yeah, it sucked. I think some nice matched IB4200 6 cell packs will be the best for me. |
RE: SV27 Battery Thread
Im' lovin my IB4200's SHV's in my SV27....but there's just one little problem. My Twin Peak charger doesn't like them. The 4200 mah x 2 capacity overheats the charger every time I charge the packs. I now have to time the packs at 30 minutes...disconnect them...let the charger cool for a while...then finish charging them later. Anybody else have this happen? I may have to get a new charger. Uggggg.

RE: SV27 Battery Thread
I use a Super Brain 977 Pro. It gets pretty hot charging 2 batts at 5 amps, but never has it shutdown on me  That sucks dude.

RE: SV27 Battery Thread
Even had to charge my 8 cell IB4200s on the twinpeak for a while, eenthouh it is not made for it but never had a problem. Just repeaked 4 6cell 4400 packs with no problem.

RE: SV27 Battery Thread
I use a small desk fan pointed at the batterhes while charging them. It helps alot. My Duratrax Ice has a built in fan that helps it from overheating. You might want to get a small desk fan and point it at your charger and see if that helps.

RE: SV27 Battery Thread
Yea,
I have never used high-mah batteries before. The most i have ever had was 1500 mah and that was for my jato started battery Dan |

Uggggg. Hi Roosky, The IB4200 are widely used in the European race-scene, but they are on the manufacturers limit as far as being rugged; there have been countless occasions on which some of the cells have died, due to overheating after being charged. It seems to be very important to keep the cell temperature under 45 degrees Celcius, when you take them from the charger and put them into the boat. These cells heat up substantually after being disconnected from the charger, once they exceed 70-75 degrees C, the will gass and loose pressure/punch, or, if the motor load is high enough, die altogether, taking off their coats. When running in the European Championship this summer, using the new IB4200, I sadly had to drop out of the second heat with two cells overheating, slowing me down considerably.... The general idea is to run the cells twice a day max, cool them while charging and only charge them with 2A. I've done this for the remainder of the season and my other IB4200 have survived until now. I only use a higher charging current during the last five or ten minutes of the cycle, taking the fan off, to get the cells at working temperature (40 degrees C). Only running them twice a day meant I had to use my last years GP3300 for at least one heat of the three we run, I must say, the difference isn't that great at all, if I go by the number of laps I can squeeze out, within the limit of the 6 minute race. So gents, go easy on your IB4200, they don't stand up to the abuse the GP3300 takes effordless... Regards, Jan. |
RE: SV27 Battery Thread
Thanks Jan. The good news is my IB4200's are not getting hot off the charger. They are just barely warm really. It's the charger itself that gets hot and shuts down. The charger has a fan too but it still can't handle the time and energy it takes to charge these cells. A new charger may be in my future.
BTW...I only run my IB4200's once a day at the most. If I need another run I drop in my GP3300's |
RE: SV27 Battery Thread
When it comes to the ib batteries I've found them to be much more finicky to charging variations than the gp cells, they do not like high amp charging at all or peaking at high amps too many times a day and even though they have a higher drain than most,I have many more failed cells/packs than the gps I have. The 2amp charge rate is a very good recommendation for these cells and mine live longer that way as well,as the heat in my state in the summer is a killer for batteries anyway.I really love the new gp4300 cells for all my brushless cars ,trucks and boats.Yes ,some chargers will not completely charge the high end /amp packs and will kick off before they are thru charging, my old mrc stuperbrain 969 and 977 both will false peak these high mah batteries.I went ahead and got a good charger for these newer cells and don't have any more of these frustrating problems with false peaking.I got the futaba 5000.VERY good ,but pricey, investment.

RE: SV27 Battery Thread
I got my Super Brain 977 today. I was charging two brand new, never been ran/charged packs at the same time. THey are both 7 call IB 4200. It took the Super Brain about 40 minutes to say that those two packs were charged. Told me that the Volts was somewere around 9.?? for both. I really should have looked better. The mAH was 3????. Whats the deal? Did I get a Brain with a learning disablity or do I just need to run them in the SuperVee a few time?

RE: SV27 Battery Thread
Why only running them once a day?

RE: SV27 Battery Thread
I have a set of 6cell IB4200 from Steven, best run so far (still waiting on other props [:@]) at 33.8Mph, temperatures are good. Have a 7 cell 3500 Tenergy pack form ebay (for traxxas villain) and it is always very hot, on the last run the shrink wrap melted, and the boat is 2-3 mph slower [:@], will do one more test with the tabs back up and the 7cell packs, but propably done with those.
I have 8 cell IB4200 packs from Steven which I run in my Waveshark, no problem with the temps, his packs are simply awesome. |

RE: SV27 Battery Thread
I will. I am considering breaking them "manually". I mean by running them in the boat. I would really like to get the boat in the water considering I have had it for two weeks and have not seen the pond yet. I will let you know. :)

RE: SV27 Battery Thread
I also have a super brain 977. I have the same prob with my DTX3800s. It'll charge for about 1800mAh then cut off. Sometimes 4 to 5 times before I get a full charge. I made a spreadsheet for my T5 to keep track of the mAh. After done I'm getting about 4500-4800 mAh in each pack, which is right about on the money as far as the 125% rule for new batts.
The prob is with the new higher mAh batts getting false peaks. I really don't mind because it forces me to keep an eye on the batts while charging. |
