Nitro to Electric
Hello i'm from the Darkside ( Nitro ) and I have decided Nitro sucks becasue there is just to much messing around for a few hours fun. Sick of things going wrong with them silly chinese crap engines.
So the boat I have is a Volvo b-24 Nitro 18 Team Infinity engine Now the boat has a Very good design hull and I live the way it looks and handels. But I dont like the Nitro crap no more I just want to put my boat in the water and Go, None of this tuning it up everytime a cloud comes out. I want something that going to move like it should and not struggle, So if I start by ripping everything out the boat apart from the steering servo water pickup and outlet, Then I should have loads of room to get my Motor and ESC and Failsafe in there. I not made of money but probs looking to spend about mmmm £100 maybe a little more duno. To convert this Nitro crap into Electric ( Why oh Why did I get a Nitro in the 1st place ) So I would like you to reccomend a good set up for a decent rig. eg. what motor, ESP, Battery and so on. Also what sort of running time am I looking at becasue When I used to have electric cars back in the days, it was like 8mins and you were packing up to go home. anyway any help would be great. 1981Psycho |

This is my Nitro Hammer to Dual electric outboard conversion. Sorry, the Nitro motor was not in the boat when I bought it. But the servo is mounted near where the nitro motor was.

RE: Nitro to Electric
WoW that looks amazing dude good job :)
Anyone got more pics of a rig close to mine so I can see where to locate things. |
RE: Nitro to Electric
100 pounds to me, means a very heavy boat. Disregarding that I would recommend, a Feigao 10L, 80A ESC, on 8 cells.
Place everything so that the batteries will allow you any adjustment for CofG. Your CofG should be around 27-33% from the rear of the transom as a starting point. Move your batteries to get with in this range. Usually these offshore eBay boats are built in electric and nitro versions. You can check out the electric version as far as placement goes. Oh, and just because one can not get an engine to run does not mean it's crap. ;) I've had several nitro's that run more consistant and last longer in terms of years then electrics. Ryan |
RE: Nitro to Electric
No trust me these Nitro boats are crap, I have had about 7 hours play time to about 20 hours getting the thing back together. If it,s not the fuel tank that moves it will be one of the fuel lines that come off. Then there is the never ending Exhaust problem of it just poping off the silocon hoses. Tries tie straps and anything and everything to hold the exhaust on, Finaly got the exhaust on and the dam silicon split. The to top it off the same day the pullstart broke.
Weakpoints with this boat. Everything accept the Hull and servos. Honnest please nobody buy this cheap chinese crap just like the XRC buggy, Anything from china mass produced AVOID like aids. RE: Nitro to Electric
honestly nobody here recomends the mass produced chinese boats you get off of ebay. If you spend cheaply you get cheap. Ever heard the saying if it walks like a duck, sounds like a duck..... Now just a word of warning both sides of fast rc boating ( fast is also a speculative term) electric an nitro have sides to both of them that involve a certain bit of know how to run. An dont think owning cars planes or even helis give you an edge on the learning curve boats are a whole nother beast! All youve learned so far that I can see is that stuff breaks, yup it happens on electrics too. I would suggest mocking up an adjustable strut to replace that one you currently have on. be prepared to spend what you spend on the bits (ecu motor hardware) spend that amount equally or even more so on the batteries an seriously listen to the advice of much more electric inclined folks on this website. I personally only have a villian ep an shes bone stock because Im a gear head an nitro just was easier than adding subtracting dividing ohms amps volts discharge rate an the plethora of other terms you will have to become intimate with. Wish you luck with your endever an hope you learned the real lesson, not that nitro is crap nor for that matter electric, but Most mass produced ebay only sold chinese knockoffs are crap. dont let this discourage you if you spend the right amount of money by buying from the right source you wouldnt be in this mess in the first place. look to the knowledge of others we are all here to help!

RE: Nitro to Electric
Well Nitro is just not for me, Had a Hyper 7 Nitro buggy nothing but problems and now a Nitro boat. Its Messy, there aint too many places I can take the Nitro boat and the build quality is totaly unreal and they should not be selling these things to anyone.
Electric would probs suit me more and I wish I just got one in the first place. Now Im not after something that going to go 60mph I just want enough speed to have fun with. Fun is not what I have had with this boat so far. Had the engine out about 20 times and this is nothing to do with me being a newbi to nitro, Everything that could fail on this boat has. I bought it because I'm new to RC boats and they used false Advertising to get people to buy it. So I do 100 % want to convert to Electric I have everything I need apart from the Motor + Coil , Battery, Water Cooled ESC and a failsafe. I just wanted sombody to recommend some decent kit that aint going to break the bank or spead records. I want to get this hull moving like it should and enjoying the hobby. This nitro engine is not it any working condition at the moment so may use it at a later date. If I ever do a self build or anything like that. Please could sombody recommend some decent kit. |
RE: Nitro to Electric
whats the hull length? like I said Im no electric expert (nor am I in nitro but you know what i mean) that boat was powered by a .18 an a deep vee which are not noted to get super amounts of speed without massive amounts of power. I wouldnt even reccomend trying for 60s youll probably waste a ton of money to only find out the hull while may look nicely made cant handle the stress of such speeds an/or designed to handle that fast. Take for example the SV27 both in brushless an nitro setups they have only attained in the upper forties with some serious tinkering, in the nitro version (uses a .15 aquacraft) they all adamantly say dont try to switch up to the bigger .18 motors since the hull is literaly overpowered losing stability an speed. but I would probably post some dimensions weight an some other specifics so some electric gurus could point out a nice set-up.heck I'd look at the brushless supervee thread an take their motor/esc/batt combinations as at least as a way of giving you a bench mark on the motor/esc/batt combo that would best suit you.

RE: Nitro to Electric
A nitro SuperVee has an Aquacraft .18 stock.

RE: Nitro to Electric
thanks for catching my typo!:D 14hours on shift an the day seems like its just getting started! my point their beign that hull was designed for their .18 even the hotter os .18 has been written off as being too much for the boat.

RE: Nitro to Electric
If I get the boat to do 30-40mph im happy with that as long as its in the water and not on the work bench

RE: Nitro to Electric
I am not quite sure as to how that mark converts to u.s. dollars, however I believe it is around a 2 to one ration so I will give it a shot. First off, you will need an electric motor mount, you can find these for less then $15. As far as motor & esc is concerned I would go with the new traxxas vileon system, the specs are in the right range for running a small mono from what I have seen. Now, this will put you at around $175 usd w/out any batteries or chargers. Then for batteries I believe a 3s 2p a123 pack will be the cheapest way to go. You can find the cells on the rc universe for sale sections for $10 a piece. Then you will have to purchase a charger of your choice. I think your best bet for a charger would be if you can get a good deal on a mrc 989. All in all I would expect to pay around $300 usd for this stuff if you really shop around for the best prices. The batteries will give you right around 5 minutes of run time at wot & w/ a 10 amp charger they will have about a 25 minute charge time. This setup will give you a lot more power then that .18 gave you. Odds are you will want to run in one of the lesser profiles which will increase your run times. Running the 3s pack will help to keep your charge time down while increasing run time even if you find that you only need to run a 2s pack or turn down the esc.

RE: Nitro to Electric
LOOk, I ask for help to convers nitro to electiric and explain im a bit of a noob, They you come up with some ****e more or less saying "You don't know what you're doing"
This is why I asked for help, I don't want to use Nitro anymore. I find it hard to believe that anyone on here can't suggest a half decent motor, ESP and battery. I was asked to Pics of my boat and I did only one person came up with what motor and ****e to get and one person came up with something, I was waiting for a response like "YEA go with that or NO get this" Insted it,s a load of BS not helping with this post at all, Just people saying "LOOK at me LOOK at how much I know about boats" Yea well I got the help I needed from another forum and they said the same about this forums and I was thinking. BYE BYE |
RE: Nitro to Electric
Ok, hope I can help. I mate of mine has one of these and to be honest, they are pretty bad. The engine has so much compression that it breaks the (really soft rubber) motor mounts when you try to start it, the holes in the radio box dont line up with the linkages, stuff like that.
As ryan said, a feigao motor and cheap esc should get you going pretty well. www.unitedhobbies.com would be a good place to start, with [link=http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4882]this[/link] motor and [link=http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4315]this[/link] esc. Both are proven to work well together, and should give you descent power on about 8 ni-mh cells (or 3 lipo cell is your feeling flushed). You can get everything else here in the UK from www.astecmodels.co.uk - motor mounts, a new coulpling (5mm to 4mm), and probably a new prop. The standard one willl probably be too big, but it is hard to find any other 4mm drive dog props , but you can just buy 4mm threaded props and put them on the bit where the prop nut shows. hope i helped . |
RE: Nitro to Electric

psycho if you cant keep your temper under control, one of the mods here will control it for you. All i want is for the kids that look here to NOT see your lack of intelligence. If you were a man, you would have made good on your statement when you said Bye the first time.

RE: Nitro to Electric
If $300 is too much then go shop around at unitedhobbies.com and you should be able to get an esc & motor & lipos for like $150, then just add a charger of your choice.

RE: Nitro to Electric
why not just go out and buy a electric boat? send the other boat to someone that knows about nitro boats and get over it? just my 2 cents...
