Another Shockwave 36 FE conversion.

Had this boat a while in the loft and decided to get some 'clean' use from it instead of the messy nitro power.;)
I have most if not all the bits needed.
My son Jack has been pestering me to do it FE for a good while..
Medusa motor,2300kv,a bit 'hot' but will do for 4S,my son runs slowish anyhow[:o]...ideally 1800kv would be better, but dont have one..
Seaking 180 esc.
Spare Futaba R603FS 3-Channel 2.4GHz FASST Rx
4S 25C 10000mah lipos,2-5000mah packs..
Spare digital servo.
Good selection of props.

I have a spare Etti motor mount..
Will take some pics as work progresses.
day off work today so got stuck in.

Stripped all the inards out and degeased the inside, what a mess!!
Ground a larger area where the lipos will sit after checking cog with all the stuff placed inside,i went for a rough 30% from transom???

I intend to strengthen the hull floor with a good layer of slow drying epoxy where the motor mount will sit,it is very thin..
Plenty of vent holes to fill too.

Sounds like a fun build...............i'm jealous, looking forward to the pic postings!!

I love the shockwave hull.
Its so scale looking for its size.

I sure do miss my nitro shockwave 36.
I dream of making one a FE.

Managed to get a bit more done.
Fitted the Etti motor mount after reinforcing the mount area with some slow setting epoxy, very slow drying, its the supposidly 30 minute stuff from Hobbyking, more like 24hrs,nice and strong though..
Painted the inside with some car engine enamal, quick drying and fuel and water proof, looks a bit neater and easier to see if water is entering the hull.I try to do all my hulls with it.One coat is sufficient.

The original Shockwave flex is a .187 flex with a .187 stub shaft,my motor coupler is a .150 collet and i have a few spare 150 flex,187 stubshaft,so i fitted a 150 flex stuffing tube inside the old shockwave 187 stuffing tube,it fits great.
Filled in all the deck holes with some 5 minute epoxy and shoved some wet paper mache down the rear 'exhaust' stainless tubes and then filled with some slow drying epoxy.
Also i cut the radio box out of the hull, not needed with FE tape,i crafted a servo holder from the old radio box and glued it in place.

Fitted the motor 4mm connectors onto the esc and fitted some 5.5mm for the power leads.
Cant go much further until i test the empty hull in the bath tomorrow to check for water leaks.

Plus programmed the Seaking 180 esc. These escs dont seem to like a cutoff limit for lipos, cutting of at the wrong voltage.
I always program them for 'no cutoff',and they seem to work well. Its obvious when volts are starting to drop a bit when we run our boats and then bring them in slowly.

I am also going to angle the turn fins as i've read thats the way to go for these hulls.
Also going to trim the rudder down a bit in height.

pics are a bit dark..

Hi Ady,not going to be able get this boat ready for sunday[>:],just about to start a 12hr day at work[:o]
Taking the 33"FE mono,29"FE cat and the gas Mercury cat tomorrow, hope its fine weather..hoping Adrian makes it with his new BIG cat..

Managed to finish this boat tonite, easy build.
My water jacket from Etti came the other day,it was that what was the hold up.
Going to try it with a new sharpened and balanced x442 at weekend.
It balances perfectly at 33%.the hull is totally water tight after a bath test,
The only thing i should have done is mount the motor a bit further forward, the angle of the stuffing tube and my mount wouldnt let me drill the water nipples on the jacket in the correct place,ie 1 up,1 down. The bottom nipple wouldnt fit without touching the hull.
It will be ok i think..Also it it would have allowed me to use a longer flexshaft and stuffing tube, enabling a good piece of silicone tubing on the flex tube, reckon a fair bit of water will come up the tube on the lake[:o] I can possibly redo it after a trial run.
I also removed the left turnfin and adjusted the right the proper angle,we Brits mainly do right turns on clockwise circuits[8D]

it wont be no speed demon, but reckon a good 40mph which is as fast as our nitro version. Its a fair bit heavier than nitro, but we always thought the nitro one was too light and flighty in the rougher water.
It will be a good long run time boat for my 12yr old son.
I'll get some video..

I'm new and what is that ??????

FE Conversion ???

RE: Another Shockwave 36 FE conversion.

Its a converted from nitro engine powered boat to an electric powered boat.ie all nitro motor stuff out and electric motor, esc and batteries in..
should be able to take it for a test run this weekend.it actually gives sunshine and calm winds for the weekend..;);)

o.k thanks I understand now

is it more quick ????

RE: Another Shockwave 36 FE conversion.

Tested it last nite,ran great,very stable at speed,no chinewalk.maybe 40-45mph..Ran a backcut X445 2 blade.
It ran much better than the nitro version.
Lipos, motor and esc came back very cool after a good 8 mins. of circuits and fast sprints.
As suspected though,it took a alot of water through the prop shaft, going to do a few mods next week if time..
No video,forgot the camera.
I'll try and get some tomorrow..

i have this same boat an i am too impatient to run the nitro engine. i am looking into setting my boat up the same as you and look forward to seeing all the information you have to get it all right!

RE: Another Shockwave 36 FE conversion.

Update.the boat took a ton of water up the original flexshaft tube,i kinda thought it would.maybe as much as 1.1/2 pints!!on an eight min.run.Amazingly the Turnigy ESC and servo still work..they were completely submerged.
basically the motor is sat too low and just drips in fast.
Ripped the motor and mount out,a bit of heat from a small gas blow torch melted the epoxy easily.
i plan on mounting the motor towards the front on top of the cross member stringers and then the 2 lipo packs on the side of the hull.
i need a longer flex shaft which will take a few days.
Also i now have a spare 2000kv 80mm medusa motor from another boat(long story) which i will fit instead of the 2300kv 70mm medusa, which ran ok but a lower KV will be more torque and longer run times on the same 4S 10000mah packs.
I will post some more pics when i get the flex shaft in.

Birddognit, these hulls make good electric boats, definately worth doing.10 minute run times on a sensible setup is easily possible.

RE: Another Shockwave 36 FE conversion.

Changed the motor for a 80mm 2000kv Medusa motor and mounted it higher this time.It needed a longer flex shaft.
Fitted the 2 lipo packs in the centre this time, which were easier to fix down.
Ran well this afto with a detongued X645 prop.
After 6 mins the packs only took 3250mah! which is an average draw of only 35amps.
It has gone a bit noisy which i think is resonace from the Shockwave strut.I will have to source some better bearings for the 3/16 stubshaft.
last run of the day was about 12 mins.Lipos/motor come back barely warm.
Bit of video with jack,my son, racing a Dr Psycho mono2 boat again on 4S lipo.
Not one drop of water inside the hull[8D]
