Default Quality Stinger type surface drives?

Any thoughts on quality stinger surface drives that would work good in a twin drive application. I was thinking M&D, but they are out of stock. I like the way top seceret boats drives look...not sure how they work. Any other good brands out there that are user friendly, work good, and durable?

Del

Check out the carbon fiber stuff that the Swiss Model Boating team makes, wicked googly over on the dock is using them on his MHZ hull. SOmebody else around here should be able to give you a web address for them. The Bonzi's are nice too, more simple of a system that having a seperate rudder and strut. Ken.

Oh yes, the Swiss Stuff is choice, CF is bso sexy! A bit pricey, but so sweet.

IMHO, the Topsecret stuff is as good as the Speedmaster stuff and it is also race proven. It is Bill Garretts stuff, he has been around for awhile and Raj uses his stuff too.

Also, MHZ has some pretty nice looking stinger type drives, I am sure you saw them since you have the S6 now, but pretty nice looking stuff.

One thing about the Arnesen drives, they are made for a cat like the Jolly Motor or something with a deep overhang off the back, I know Wicked Goggly over at Jims is using them on a really big Fountain Vee, not sure how he intends to mount those drives.

I really like this Trimax from MHZ, it is kinda expensive though, but sure looks cool.

I like the S6 drive...but I would like to keep some of my boat a little more simple.

I talked with on of the surface drive manufactures today. He said the best way to use the drive setup with a counter rotating prop is to run the flex cable all the way through the stinger drive and mount the prop on the flex cable itself.....

Is that normal? Would it work ok? I guess it just seems cheesy to me.

I have a bunch of cool looking stinger drives in hand. I will be using at least one pair as a dual setup.

The Trimax drives are a little expensive and the carbon drives like Phil (Wickedgoogly) is using are VERY pricy (though works of art) -similar price to the S6's. Also as Dave mentioned they are Arneson drives and will need to be adapted to work on a vee. I know Phil real well (perhapse too well ) and know money is no object with his project - so he will make them work.

I will try to send or post a pic or two of these drives I have. bare with me as this dial up connection is killin me !!

I am not sure I understand your last post about mounting props directly to the cable Del. A counter rotating prop requires a reverse twist cable as well as a source of power in the opposite direction (either a C/R motor, motor installed backwards, or gearbox). the easiest way I know of to get a counter rotating drive is from the stern drives (I have a bunch of them too!!).

Matt...I ordered a gearbox with one input and two counter rotating outputs. I also ordered two 1/4 inch cables...one is stadard cable the other is wound for reverse rotation. I am Just trying to figure out what surface drives I should use.

On my last post....I had talked with someone and they were trying to recommend running the flex all the way trough the stinger drive and mounting the prop right on the flex shaft. It sounded kind of cheesy to me.

I don't want to spend a huge amount of m oney on drives, but I want to spent enough to get good quality and performance. I really like the M@D drives but they are out of stock at the moment.

I also really like the MTC stuff. I found there web site but none of it's in english. I think MHZ is the only US ditributoe for them right now and the only carrry a couple products right now. I talked with Loo and he said they were planning on adding more products to the website in two to three weeks.

I would like to see some pictures of the drives you have Matt. Who makes them?

Del, have you considered where to get a counter rotating prop? Also, what if Del were to run twin surface drives with dual rudders each? Great handling huh? I don't know how you could connect to the flex cable with the prop without boring out the hub? Why would anybody do that, everybody uses a prop-shaft from the flex cable. SOUnds like a lot more building or "Outfitting' for you Del. ken.

Matt, the previous post about the 4 rudders was a serious question, please don't correct me on it as now you know my real intentions Ken.

Ken, There are plenty of props for counter rotation. I was actually hoping to run a single rudder. I think it would simplify things and work fine.

a simple rudder for each drive, or just one? I don't think it would handle very well with two props and one rudder because I know that twin engine boats don't turn as well as single engined boats. Ken.

This is not a twin engine boat. It is a single engine twin drive boat. I think a single rudder centered behind the props shoud work fine. I have not purchased the drives or the rudder setup so I will have more time to research...My thought is I won't have to worry about prop walk because of the counter rotating props. I think one long rudder would work better than two. I think in turns the dual rudder setup might tend to lift one of the rudders out of the water. Have you had a boat with a single rudder Ken? Have you had a boat with dual rudders? Have you had a twin engine boat? If you have I woulkd like to hear more about why you think I need a dual rudder setup.

I meant that in turns, like on the Fountain I own, with twin engines, in turns, the outside prop tends to lift to the surface of the water. With a single drive boat, the x-dimension and prop is lower in the water, as well as the rudder, so in turns it stays down under the water to provide better control. X-dimension is how low the drive is mounted on the transom of a boat, lower the drive, the less speed but increased handling. ken.
