RE: Jeremy's cheap 48" mono boat project
I layed my chines on today and made new better engine mounts. I will have pics up when i get back from work. What is the best placement for the engine? How far from the transom should it be? I have heard that 33% of the boat length from the transom should be the balance point. I will post pics of what i have mocked up when i get back from work as well. Tomarrow i will try and glass the stingers and then epoxy the outer hull.

why did you take the cowl off? that will affect the cooling ,the cowl directs air to the head[X(].i left mine on on mine for that reason.if you can put it back on .

Looks like it will get plenty of cooling air to me. The back shroud will direct the airflow from the flywheel and the front will get air as the boat moves foward.

The back cowl really dosn't do that much i think. That part of the head will be in the wind as it is and will get plenty of cooling.
I plan on putting in a seperate breather tube for the tank and fulling through the fuel line so i can put the tank wherever i want really.
I have mocked up the tank in the middle of the middle bulkhead so i think that is a good mix of to far forward and to far back.
I think that i am also going to think about making a removeable deck. I don't know if it will work but i am going to think about it.

I know it will help out a little bit but i think i makes the bottom of the boat look sexy as well. It cost me only a few dollars for them so i got them.

Dylan, my advice would be to try the boat without the strakes first, you can always add them later if you think you need them. It's easier to add them if you need them than it is to remove them if you find they don't work for you. Strakes might be a good idea if you're running a low power, heavy engine, but are definitely not necessary if you're using a Zenoah or some other engine with good power. By the way, they are not chines, they are strakes. A chine is the edge where the bottom meets the sides of the boat. Doug

RE: Jeremy's cheap 48" mono boat project
Alright here is an update. I have got the fiberglass almost done on the stringers, i got the nose done, and started epoxying the hull. The lake i liveon is not huge but the madden voyage will probably be in it.
A cost break down so far.
Wood !/4 ply $4 1/8 ply $6
Epoxy 8 at $2.99
Fiberglass $6
Engine/tank/flex drive $3
Nuts and bolts $4
Aluminum Stock $11
Chins/ Straks $6
Rubber Stoppers $1
I still have to get/make
radio (ebay $35)
Strut (make it $6)
bearing ($7 ebay)
stub shaft/ferrule (ebay $12)
fuel lines (few bucks at hareware store)
paint
So we are looking like $150 total hopefully

Yeah it is small but there is a lot nicer one down the road with a gazibo on it that is in the water so you can stand in the lake with a pretty much unobstructed view.

I want to do a full canopy but that will have to wait until i can water cool it and lower the engine down a bit, it sits a little high and would look funny. I think just a simple v shield and a full tapper all the way back to the transom will do for now.

RE: Jeremy's cheap 48" mono boat project
Got everything coated today and placed all the parts i have on it and filled the tub with water and put her in. She sat flat with the nose a few inches off the water. I think with the radio gear and the drive assembly she will sit a little better. I am going to smooth out the boat and then paint. I have yet to build the deck but i will do that soon. I got the radio box built and i need the coat that as well. I will weigh her soon. She is going to have a cannery yellow hull with a white deck and black seperating strip. A name is in the works too. I am going to fix the motor in the rails when everything is set and get the flex shaft in there. I mocked up the trim tabs and rudder and i will fix them and seal it all up. Hopefully the boat moves closer to being done this week.

you need to balance the boat on a broom handle at 30% dont go by how it sits in the water .heres a pic of the canopy i just made for my glass hull .ill be fitting a louvred vent once i find one to fit in the meantime i cut a slot out the back to let air escape.

Got some updates. I have got the engine mounted. I still need to fix the gas tank into the hull but i got the deck and wind shield taped on. I like the way it looks.
