Default oops!

Grim

is the rio a gel coated hull, or painted. it kinda looks like both due to the clear coat on it, but after looking at the damage i made makes it look like it's a gel coat finish.

well i was breaking in the ole fuji today. was doing circles in a local pond. there is a big rock near shore. i almost hit it ounce. well i thought to myself i was going to hit it sooner or later. well i guess i jinxed myself. you i hit it good. was doing either 1/2, or 3/4 throttle when i realized i was going to hit the rock. me being the ole rc car guy gave it full left (thank god i fixed the no left turn problem) rudder, and stood on the breaks. oh ya i'm driving a boat. no breaks!!! well the bow takes a glancing blow turning her broadside to whack the rock! HARD!! thud... she bounces off, turns 90 degree left, and drops dead in the water. motor got shut off when i stood on the breaks. i need to put new pads on her. lol

well 1 nice gash on her side, and 1 chip up front, and some clear coat scratched off. lucky doesn't even begin to describe the end result. it could have been way worse. could have hit nose first, and been a total disaster.

here are pics.

Easily fixed with some epoxy resin, micro baloons, sandpaper & a spraycan. Trust me, it won't be the last hit you have. A pack of micro baloons, some resin & a bit of glass cloth is a handy kit to have in your drawer if you run boats.

my friend said the same thing about epoxy on the outside. i have west system G/flex epoxy 650-K repair kit i use to build my keels for my sailboats. i have one question though. it takes like 30-45+ min to start to harden up. how do i keep it from sagging while it cures?

i used it with some matte on the inside already. should be ready for the outside tomorrow IF i can figure out how to keep it from running. all help greatly appreciated.

run some masking tape along the chine and poor it in. If you use the micro baloons it will turn the resin into a bog that will hold it's shape while it cures.

I add in small amounts until the resin is at the consistency of a soft serve icecream. It will depend on the type of resin & the temperature you mix it at. Mix the resin up really well to get the reaction going, and then add in the micro baloons. Use a ice cream stick or spatula to spread it on. It's also a good Idea to sand the area 1st, then smear it with a bit of resin before you add the bog on. This will give you the best bond. once it has set you can sand it back and then spray it.

well here's an update. i ground out some material, and made a tape tub around the injury. mixed up my west system epoxy, and added the thickening agent. it's not micro balloons, but what ever west system calls it. put way more on than needed, but i'll gut off the majority then sand, prime, spot putty, prime, and then paint. here are the pics.

That's basically how I do it, with practise you'll get the epoxy & filler to a thicker conistency (I can't see through the filler that I mix up) & won't need to put on as much. Once you've sanded it back you may need to put a thin smear of epoxy over it to fill in any imperfections, then final sand & paint.

well my intentions is to get it flat then if needed finish with finish fiberglass mud. AKA body filler. prime then paint. this stuff is a pain to sand!

i hear ya. took my dremel, and ground off the over kill first. it really is sanding faster than i make out, but it gums up the paper fast. i'll keep ya posted.

If it's gumming up the paper it hasn't cured fully yet. You can still sand it & finish it, it will harde up over time.

maybe i should have said clogging not gumming. well i got her sanded as far as it's going. it looks good enough. not perfect, but i gotta hose her down, and dry her off. i'll probably just prime, and spot putty her if needed. she is real close. i'll snap a few pis to post. the bow issue turned out really nice, but a coat of primer, and a quick scuff will really tell the true story. i sanded out the other scuffs out of the clear coat.

out to give her a bath. pics to follow.

well here is the finished epoxy. the pics show what i missed better than just looking at the hull. my eyes are getting worse as i get older. i'll prime her tomorrow after work if it's warm enough, and spot putty whatever needs it. not going to worry about color because it's going orange with flames.
