Default New build, might need some advise...

Just about to start work on this boat, its a 60" MTI cat.
As you can see it floats..
It will have an inline Zen.I have all the drive bits etc, plus the motor and headers , just waiting for some pipes which should be here late next week..

Before i start drilling into this beautiful hull, a major question.
Should i offset the strut to compensate for the torque with the inline?

I want this to be a neat build and only really get one chance with the drill[]

Any advise from experienced inline boat guys?
Brod..

brodjack

From what ive read most of the good builders do move the strut to the right about 1/8to1/4 from centre line i wish i had done this with my cat now i do it with my rudder to compensate for this always wants to turn ontill its on plane.Marc on modlegasboats.com did a nice build that you shuild look at in a conquest cat very good info. Hope this helps you some.

Brod theres not enough colour on that thing cant you brighten it up a bit ,serriously though it looks good.If you do a search theres many threads on this cat with lots of info also you might want to ask my buddy Matt Justaddwatta as i reckon hes probably built one hes built just about every other cat going .

I PM'd Matt a while back, apparantly he's not run an inline on a hull of his size.He has tha same hull,so hope he's going to offer afew tips on the strut.
My Mercury cat would possibly have been better with an offset strut, but was much smaller.

These hulls are something else on quality compared to our usual China hulls, which are fine for a light boat, but this thing is solid.
Tony(stoddy) reinforced the inside with some more glass too.
According to your links Mart, these are fast stable hulls even with modest motors.
Pity the link starter never finished the build.
Its too damn good for Fleetwoods saltwater though[]

I know Matt has the big Miss geicho cat now and it has twin inlines ,hes had it for a while now so id have thought hed have run it by now.Hopefully he will chime in,i thought that mti cat i linked was his could be wrong though.Seems to be a few different versions of this cat or should i say builders.Good luck with it,way too big for me but i fancy something arround 56" even then id need a roof rack for it to fit on .Was thinking of scratch building one but its a lot of work might leave it till next year .

Hi brod I run a 54ins cat made by forabuck (expresscraft lookalike) wiith a inline Zen and have no issues with a strut that is set dead center it runs straight at top speed around 60mph, my main probs have been with the clutch also the prop, these engines have huge torque and require care when you set them up in the boat if you want any info get in contact

I have been pretty slack lately and have not spent any quality time with the toys. I am still in the same position I was in a month or so ago regarding my MTI. (Been tied up with domestic duties).

I personally wont be offsetting the strut and as a rule I dont do it. I just think that if I need to compensate for a little torque I would rather do it via controller since the torque will vary from prop to prop anyway. You can always shim one side of the strut as an option once you are up and running, have the prop you like, and can judge how much you need to correct it by..

I have yet to glass in the rails in mine though did get my pipe needs organized. Fits easy enough though.

The stringers are really thick on mine, also reinforced by Tony.
Think i will go for centre placement then,i've pondered too long over this one decision, its hardly life or death[]

My Insane no leak flanges came early last week so all i need is the pipes.
Which pipes did you go for Matt?

Which props do you use Telluk? any pics of the insides?
Cheers..

I went with a pair of zero band pipes and a 90 and 4" (think it was) offset stainless header - actually I got a collection of new headers so I had a choice but think the 4" will be the better fit. I could run banded pipes but figure I would stick with the std zero - power is not going to be much a problem.

I will be proping mine with an 8018/3 to start and go from there. The motors should turn a bigger prop than that without much fuss but I will aim a little conservative until I get a feel for it.

My COG will be forward some. Basically I am not moving the stuffing tube from where it was when setup with a QD25 so in essence she will probably end up pretty wet. I just did not want to move too much around (call me lazy) and figure I can adjust the balance with fuel tanks etc later on.

HI brod the best prop so far is the ABC two blade 3014 from Dasboata have tried 3114 it seemed a bit to much for the engine the octura 482 ran but the engine needed more prop, are you running a clutch?

Well managed to find some good time to get going on this boat.
I decided to not offset the prop shaft tube. The rudder mounted the usual side too,i was pempted with the other side but decided against.
Anyway got the strut, rudder, water pickups under the hull mounted,my rudder has only one water pickup hole and i wanted a strong flow on this boat.
Epoxied the flextube in also, the stringers are 5.1/2 " so i couldnt use a stock 5"Tbar,my pal who is an engineer is crafting me a suitable one.
I am not convinced just the epoxy will hold the stuffing tube in place after a few runs,i like the solidness of Tbars.

Got the radio box lined up and servos in,i jst need afew small nuts and bolts to complete it.

My exhaust pipes came last week, nice! am going to weld them to the header pipes to try to get about 13-14" tuned length.
Going to have to fabricate some mounts for the pipes next week, the bottom pipe will be no problem as a bracket will fit nicely on one of the stringers, its the top pipe which will be the tricky one.
I plan on exiting the exhausts threw the under side of the hull at the rear with some nice stainless cones i have via some, maybe, silicone tubing.
It didnt take me long to build the above, tons of room inside this huge hull, can easily get my big hands in!!

I'm going to mount some grab handles front and back,my son Jack wont be able to throw it in otherwise.

Looking forward to its maiden, hopefully about 3 weeks..

Looks great Brod have you seen these t bars with the oiler cup? im fitting one in the vee im building for a guy, should help keep the drive line lubricated. You could have used some plywood to make up the gap between t bar and rails but then you would need longer studs i supose.Im getting a twtchy trigger finger i havent ran any boats in ages and im busy for the next cpl of weeks but im hoping to test this mono out next week before i send it out, better get cracking so much to do .Hey Jacks gonna have his hands full launching that big pus .

Thanks lads.
Mart where did you get that Tbar from?
An oilerseems a good idea for this boat,i imagine the stresses will be high on the flex bend, fresh lubricant all the time would be a good idea.

I thought about some plywood blocks to make up the length, how long are the side bolts? the stringers arethicker than standard on this hull.

Picked up my crafted Tbar last nite at the lake from Dave.He made it 13.1/2cms which gives me just enough room to fit 2 large washers inbetween bar and stringers.
Thats looks neat Mart,i'll order one for my next build. What sort of oil do you plan on running through it?
Very windy at the lake last nite, strong easterly blowing down the lake, jacks was the only boat which saw water,i submarined it twice.Luckily no water in the radio box..

Well this boat has been gathering dust unfinished for far too long now.
So started work on it again, fitted the stainless grab handles, fitted the custom tbar, fiited stainless water outlets and best of all sent the inline stock motors off for a power upgrade it will be about 11hp when they are done[8D].
Everything else done ready for the motor to fit, should be about 2 weeks for the test runs.

Good to hear she is still in the works - makes me a tad less guilty about how slow I have been with mine. I am looking at mine as a winter project now. Keep us in the loop

Finally got this boat together now, motors back from Alro and modded to about 10-11hp.
Didnt go with the planned pipes but went with 2 of these instead;
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/stainless-stee...item43989b507c
i couldnt get the proper tuned length for modded motors with the earlier pipes with the odd shaped transom on these cats.
The china pipes fit well with 90 bend headers giving me about 12" tuned length.
I also have experimented with water injected into the rear stainless extension pipes out the rear to help quieten it down a bit,at a last push i could easily fit silencers on the outside rear ends of the pipes, but dont really want the looks of that.
Everything done apart from some bouyancy tubes inside.
Stared great in the yard with some forced water cooling for a minute or two.
http://www.youtube.com/user/jackbrod.../0/PxQyVteCtA4
Going to fit one of my cheap older props first incase the motor rips the flex to bits first run, should be ok,i think.lol[X(]
Test run this sunday..i'll get some video.
