Hi,

I am going to buy a MHZ Mystic cat (1.87m) and was wondering if the RCMK rear exhaust gas motors would fit if mounted on an angle?
I dont want to put any side scoops on the hull at all.
I have been thinking of going for 2 jetcat SPM5 turbines but not sure.
Just trying to work out gas or turbine.
Does anyone know of anybody that might have turbines that they might be thinking of selling?

The rear exhaust motors will fit no problems - the hull will accomodate side exhaust zenoahs and RCMK's

rear exhaust RCMK's Vs Turbines your talking the difference between a $3000 boat and a $12000 boat. Big difference there in price and skill (a twin turbine does not give cheap lessons - if you make a mistake it will cost you.

Trying to hunt down a pair of turbines that will fit is a long shot - and buying a pair of marine turbines used is also a risky proposition. You might consider shopping for one when they are resold as an RTR or approaching someone who has one presently - in this economy you never know - some big toys are hitting the market.

You should look up on you tube for mystic 5000. They have some mystic cats that fly and their electric. Might be a cheaper alternative.

MHZ is offering the Jetcat's as an option so I'm guessing they fit and have mounting brackets.

This would be a great project if you're comfortable with boats to the point that you know what to expect and how to keep it right side up.

This is the direction I intend to head once I'm comfortable enough with RC boats.

I agree with the used RTR given that you see it run personally first.

Cheaper alternative than what? Wont be less $$ than gas.

Every option is going to be less than turbines - but thats not what turbines are about.

thanks for the replies, Ive seen the cats on youtube.
I really like the sound of the turbines but Ive never had any experience with one.
When you buy a jetcat SPM5 turbine do you get most of the gear to start them. I know you need to buy the kero starter and batteries, but is there any thing else that is needed?

I would recommend contacting George at www.hobbydepot.com.au who is the Australian MHZ dealer - he should be able to get you a complete list of what is included with the kit and any additional components that may be needed.

I would think you may need batteries/charger and fuel tank worst case.

Thats what I thought. I just didnt what to fork out that kind of money and find out there are a lot of hidden cost.

I love these turbine powered cats like this, but every thing else aside what kind of speeds could one expect out of a twin turbine powered cat.

Power to weight ratio is definitely in the turbines favour. That said all the videos I've watched so far show the boat set up on the safe side. Not coming out of the water to high. I imagine the spin down time on the turbine is too high to prevent water from getting into the engine in the event of a flip. I suppose an air dam could be installed to try and provide a restriction to speed the decelleration.

I was just looking at Jetcat's website and it does not give specifications on the engines but their lowest output is 13 lbs of thrust, with a prop speed of 28000! That would be 170% of the max rpm my boat did tonight.

faster than you would be prepared to drive it - considering the complete devistation of around $10 000 in hull and motors that would happen if she went over. They will run over 90mph - if you could keep it on the water

I first want to say sorry for jackin this tread!

I understand that theres alot of cash at stake with these boats, & it may be the size of these boats in the vidieos i have saw, that throws it out of perspective. I also didnt even think of spool down time of the engines ether.. dont get me wrong I didnt think they were slow by any means. thanks for the answers.

I am going to think long and hard about this as I would be investing alot of money into this build. I dont want to break any speed records with the cat, but there is something about the tubines that makes it so sweet.
I will do some research and see who I can purchase two turbines from. Hopefully they will cut me a deal since im going to purchasing two.

I know model flight sell turbines for planes. you could also try George at hobby depot, his shop used to be called rc jets.

Wren and Jetcat are the only two I've found marketing engines for marine use. The issue is gearbox. The turbines turn in the neighbourhood of 120000 to 165000 rpm. The output shaft is feed to a gearbox which reduces the rpm to a useable 28000 rpm for boat propellors, on the Jetcat model.

I remember reading the output being 10 hp equivalent for the Jetcat. 20 hp in a model boat should be fun.

I'd be doubting that much of a discount is available given the low volume that is likely with this product.

Nothing against turbines but I personally would be going with twin gassers and retain the ability to push the boat to its limits affordably rather than turbines and fear distruction.

There are Mystics out there with twin inlines - that is over 20hp and will see similar speed capabilities (again if you can keep it in the water).

Perhaps the best system is twin gassers with silencers and an outboard audio system to make the turbine sound, sort of what they do with scale tanks.

A posser boat of sorts!
