Here's a link to some [link=http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102642&cp=&origkw=rare+earth& kw=rare+earth&parentPage=search]Radio Shack rare earth magnets.[/link] I don't know if these are what people were using or not.
Edit: on a whim I went to [link=http://www.mcmaster.com/]McMaster-Carr[/link] and sure enough, they have them in a variety of sizes. Just search on rare earth. |

Hi Coop. Heres some pics of those magnetic cowl locks that I used on a Thunderbolt build I did last year. I got them from Herzog Racing via JRCBD and a lot of research. I added the black nylon straps underneath as pull handles to open the hatch. I'm not sure where to get a set of them these days. BUT, I just happen to have another complete set of them in my own personal building supplys.(less the nylon straps) Shoot me a message or an email, and we can talk about the perticulars if your interested. Brian;)

Would magnets be able to hold a hatch in place on a boat subjected to rough water? I run offshore in waves up to a foot.

RE: Rare Earth Magnets - Where to purchase
Paul, If you grab the 2 nylon straps to release the magnets on the Thunderbolt cowl and lift slowly, you can lift the boat off the stand![X(] Do ya think thats strong enough for your rough water? Brian

RE: Rare Earth Magnets - Where to purchase
Just to give you an idea of how strong rare earth magnets are. I have some AlNico magnets here for a project I was working on, these are not as strong as the much smaller radio shack magnets which are Neodymium. My larger, weaker AlNico's are about 5/16th in diameter and two of them are holding a carpenters hammer on the side of my steel filing cabinet. In fact if I let them stack together, the only way I can get them seperated is to slide them apart because I can NOT pull them apart!

Thanks for the info and sites
Brian - I will send you message Monday am from work - thanks for the pics and help Coop |
RE: Rare Earth Magnets - Where to purchase
Coop, No extra reinforcement needed on the set I installed. The fiberglass behind the magnets was 1/16"+, thick. Too bad the guy I built the Thunderbolt for has found a new love,, ATV's!! The boat rarely see's the water! Oh well[:o]..........................Brian

Brian
Thanks for info - how did you mount the magnet to the hatch & hull Coop |

Coop, the magnet holds itself into a steel standoff that is threaded for a small bolt on the backside. Then a bolt thru the top of the cowl holds the standoff to the cowl. Look at the pics above again. Brian

RE: Rare Earth Magnets - Where to purchase
Brian,
That is a slick clean little setup! |
RE: Rare Earth Magnets - Where to purchase
YEP! Their kinda neet aren't they. But remember they won't work on every setup. You need a minimum of .375" space between the bottom of the cowl, and the top of the deck. Stuck together, they measure .360" thick. Brian;)
