Default Dumas Hot Shot Sprint 3.5 Tunnel Hull Build

I'm fixing to start building the Dumas Hot Shot Sprint 3.5 Tunnel Hull. This will not be a fast build as I only have time on weekends to work on the boat. I will be tracking my progress and posting pics as well. Any hints and tips will be well appreciated.

The 1st boat I ever built was the Dumas Hot Shot Sprint 7.5 which was over 10 years ago. I had started theABS hot shot 3.5 but never finished it. I used a paint scheme very similar to the one that Maus showcased on one of their sport hydros. I got into racing rc cars and ended up trading themfor some car stuff. I new one of these days I would regret itand man do I ever. Still know the guy that has the 3.5 and i'm in the process of trying to get it back.

I sold off all my RC some time back (SLOWLY am getting going again) and the dumas 3.5 I was modifying went before I totally finished it up, plugged off the back section dropped the front (radio box) section way down, and mounted a VS1 cowling on it, still had some stuff I was going to do to it BUT sold so didnt, here are some pics of where it was. also cut the cowling down so it wasnt as tall off the deck

Which of the Hot Shot Sprints do you have? ABS or Wood?

The one I'm building now isthe wood kit. The black 7.5 that I built several years ago was wooden also. The red 3.5 was ABS.

My last wood Sprint build was done WOF style. Once the main frame has been glued up, glue in foam within all the open spaces: (spoons and center section). Sand down the foam and then start to lay down the sheeting. For gluing the foam to wood / wood to foam, use Gorilla glue. Stuff will "foam" up and fill in all the gaps. The plus side to this is that the harden glue is easy to sand, unlike epoxy. This process will speed up the build since all those 1/4" stringers won't need to be glued in.

So far I've assembled the jig, glued the hull framework to the tunnel top, installed the transom doubler and sponson points.

Got the stringers glued in. Next I will start to skin the hull. So far no problems with the build. Simple and straight forward.

Got the bottom of the hull sheeted. I left a small overhang on the rear of the sponson bottom. Next is laying the seeting down on the top of the sponsons.

I recommend coating the interior of the hull with epoxy prior to attaching the top sheeting.

Hi Jerry, I am building the Hot Shot 7.5 at present. Would layering the inside of the sponsons with resin affect the flexibility of the hull? It wouldnt be prone to cracking at all?

P.S nice build thread here too...I've subcribed ;-)

When I coat the interior of a wood hull, I use a heat gun to thin the epoxy/fiberglass resin. Then brush the thinned material. Your don't need a heavy coating to seal the wood. Hull flexibility really isn't an issue. Thinned material shouldn't crack.

Jerry,

How did you coat the exterior of the tunnel you built for Rod? Was than just 2 coats of epoxy applied as you describe or did you use and auto clear coat. The finish was fantastic.

How do you feel about adding alcohol to thin the epoxy. I've done this with another boat that I built a long time ago to seal it with epoxy.

Rod finished the boat, I just sent it to him with West System Epoxy used for sealing the wood.

Alcohol will thin the epoxy, I just prefer to use a little heat.

Depending on which epoxy you use, alcohol can prevent the epoxy from curing properly. Just something to think about
