Default Small Block vs Big Block

I've seen posts on the various forums refering to "small bock" engines and "big block" engines. Can someone define for me what makes an engine a small block or a big block? Is it "anything larger than .XX cu. in. is a big block" or is there some other way of defining it?

Thanks,

Ken ( 64 and still a newb)

it also has to do with the physical size of the engine block. a lot of car & truck .21's are smaller in size than our marine .21 engines. both the engines in my trucks, a traxxas revo 3.3 & a torque .21 in my duratrax thunder quake are much smaller than any of my cmb, mac or k&b .21's. i,ve heard the smaller size .21's referred to as mid blocks, just to muddy the waters further. but like yota says, .21 seems to be the dividing line between the 2.

To me, anything over a .21 would be a big-block. Some might say that anything over a .45 would be.
Maybe one of these days we'll be calling them Mouse motors or Mountain motors like the car racers.
