Default Workshop - safe to keep engines in?

Hi all.

I now have my workshop in my garden - it is a shed that is 3.6m square. It has heating that is sometimes on, and a dehumidifier that is on most of the time, but not all the time.

As I live in the UK, it is often quite damp here, and the shed gets a bit damp. Can I keep engines in here, or will thy rust/degrade? I can put a few packets of silica gel in with them if needed. Many thanks,

Andrew

WRAP THEM UP IN OILY RAG AFTER YOU OIL THE INTERNALS OF THE ENGINE AN SEAL OFF IN A ZIPLOCK BAG. SHOULD BE OK IN THERE.

I have a friend in the San Diego area that stores his engines in a can of transmission Oil. On the other hand, if the engine has been run with castor oil in the fuel, you should not encounter any corrosion. but to be safe, the oily rag in a zip lock bag trick should be good insurance.

I would suggest you not seal the zip lock bag. Even though the engine is well oiled, sealing the bag will trap moisture.

The really important step is applying plenty of oil to the engine before storage.

I wrap mine in a rag then store in a cardboard box. The box seams to be some sort of a moisture barrier.

You could put a silica pack or three in your bag to absorb any moisture that might be in there, but I agree with JD, it's not really neccessary to seal the bag.

The open Zip Loc bag sounds locical. Basically treat the engine like grapes.

mine sits with a piece of foam in the header and carb. I take it completely apart every month or two just to inspect, clean and re-oil.

All of mine sit submerged in vegetable oil with a piece of cheese cloth over the top of the coffee can there in.

Without question store them with/in ATF( auto transmission fluid). You will not find a better anti-rust fluid...well maybe Marvel Air Tool Oil Anyways stay away from using WD-40 it has alot of solids in it and when it dries out it leaves an ugly mess.

LAter,
Tim
