Hydro Build Challenge : Dan S .18 FireFighter
All I have at this time are the Plans for the FF 18.
I am having difficulties getting the proper wood for the build in my area, if nothing turns up I will have to order online.
Once I have something started I will post some pics.

Hi Dan,
Just wanted to post this info for you. As of 01/05/08 your "FREE" OS CVR-M .18 is in the mail, I also included a header and some delrin in case you want to make a engine mount similar to the ones I have been using. The engine also has a flywheel and a flex hex coupler, I hope everything works for your build
Paul
p.s. I also included a 1hr DVD for you ...............................

Ok,
Since I don't have the wood yet, I decided I might as well start somewhere.
Soooooo....I printed out the first set of plans (main plan) and proceeded with the cutting, matching and taping.
The end result:

Hi Dan,
I had read somewhere that you where questioning flex shaft size. On the .12 I am using a .125 shaft that has a stepped prop shaft to .187, I would guess you should use a .150 flex stepped to a .187 prop shaft . I would also recommend you go with atleast speedmaster hardware for a 20 hydro, prob a mini rudder. On the .12 I have I am using CF arrows I got from the sporting goods store, they gave them too me ( I guess some stores actually calibrate the nicer bows and if the feathers get messed up they throw them away , you could ask)
Paul
p.s. These places sell stepped flex shafts but the Hughey are a little different not sure if ya need Hughey hardware.

OK,
I know its been a while, parts are coming in slowly, wood and foam is on its way (on order).
have engine mount, motor cleaned up, replaced conrod and ready to go. CF spar ready to be cut, main template to finish and waiting for my Scroll Saw.

Martin,
That was my initial plan, but I was able to acquire the laser cut kit.
There are 6 pieces missing but thats no big deal, I will make them.

The wood is usually easy to get as most hobby shops should carry it.
We've cut a few kits on my sisters laser cutters, fun little toys to have if you can afford them but 20 Grand a pop is just a little out of my price range.
I made Tom an offer for her to cut his kits but he didn't take her up on it otherwise we'd have spare parts galore.

Hey Dan, Well I see where the last proto went now. I had 3 protos cut. They were the last boats my old laser cutter made for me. Well i'm glad to see your showing your build. I really need to make a photo gallery on my firefighterboats.com web site! What parts were missing. I know the sponson outsides.... not a precision part.
I'm working with a new laser cutter now. That is a big reason for the cheese12 design. the new cutter has only 24".... that dang ff18 is like 24.7" tub!
Good luck! I hope i'm not the last one done! Honestly i've been working on my gas rigger the most lately.

Going a bit slow but its going.
I bought a sheet of 1/32 and a sheet of 1/16 ply, the inside piece for the front sponsons are done and the outside skin for front and rear sponsons are done also.
All the foam has been cut, and 50% Epoxied.
worked on the spar and part of the sponson.
The foam (Blue) is 3/4".

Hi Dan,
Looks great, I hope that foam you are using isn't to thick? You don't want the measurement from the inside skin to the center skin to be over 1" . If it is it will interfere with the forming of the outside like i showed you in the pictures in my build. But geez you are almost past me now in the build
Paul
When you set your top on and your back piece on you don't want to be able to see the 1/16" ply center at the top right corner or the bottom right corner.

OK,
A bit more progress, outside skin glued to foam, plans called for 1" of foam so I used two 1/2" pieces (rear sponson).
Front sponson all Epoxied, The inside and center skin and the bottom skin of sponson epoxied. the blue foam is 3/4" and the pink foam are three 1/2" pieces to make 1 1/2" thickness as per the plan.

Now have 99% of Front Sponson completed, foam has been shaped and they are ready to receive the final skin.
To tell you the truth at first when I was looking at the sponsons before they were all put together I couldn't figure out how the Heck I was gonna fit that outside skin?????
Once its all together you can see the picture and its actually quite simple.
Oh! and note to self "when using X-Acto knife ensure fingers are out of the way"
