I think port work on the sleeve and/or crank case is the main place to look. Normally the ports on an engine like an OS are cut perpendicular to the liner...one that has been worked may have a tapered port edge on the outside of the liner. On some cheaper engines, the liner ports and the channels in the crank case for the ports don't match up too well. So a worked engine may have some work done to the crank case so they match the ports in the liner. A more advanced engine modification would include changing the timing of the ports by cutting them higher or lower (making the openings in the liner taller).
I had heard of a company that had sent out an engine as "modified" that actually did not have anything done to it. I had hoped this was a one time mistake...and hope this is not what you are dealing with... ????
I dont know if I am allowed to mention other websites on here...but international waters might be a good place to ask for a recommendation for an engine modder. http://www.intlwaters.com/

Usually you'll have to pull the sleeve out to see if any mods were done. If it looks too smooth like it would come from the factory and you don't see any machining done that appears to have been done by someone else that yes, you got the shaft.
Sean, it is who you're thinking of, the company who can't be mentioned on this site.

Yes this is that company you are thinking of. I spent alot of money with them and I now question their work since I have read their negative feedback. they truly dont value customers. I'm fairly new at boating, So when I do get these "modified" engines in I will dismantel just a little take some pictures put them up for judging. Hopefully they dont send me a false product its been a long time waiting. Thanks though. By any chance would you happen to know of any companies who are worthy enough to perform this sort of job? Thanks for the look out.

Well...I dont want to get into referencing any company in particular...but a couple other things to look for are....work on the rod...IE knife edge on the leading and trailing edges of the rod. Also...some folks open up the oil port in the rod a little, to allow more oil to get to the bushing. Also...the crank might be modded. Some folks drill out the port in them larger (if you are dealing with a CVRM, I hope this is not the case...since it is not rare to break a crank in one of these engines...so I would not want to have anything done to one I owned that might make it weaker). Also, where the fuel/air mixture exits the crank, some folks will cut a curved exit on the rear of the crank.
I guess, in short, without a list of what a company said they would do to the engine...there are a lot of things they might have done just to call it a modified engine.
As to knowing a reputable company that does these kinds of mods...not me, I dont know one. But, I think most of them would charge more than the CVRM costs brand new to mod an engine...
