how stupid is this?
I can not get the Miss Vegas in SA, because its only available in RTR version the LHS says... but that not the problem... problem is the remote in comes with runs in the 74 MHZ range... this is the Police service's frequency... it is illegal to import them... what would happen if I imported a RTR and then simply get another remote?

RE: how stupid is this?
We have the same issue here in Australia, but we can (have) import them (not sure if it's legal), we swap the radio out and don't use it. I have imported an SV & a nitro hammer with the 75 frequency band. I have 2 aquacraft radios in my hobby room that are useless to me. It might be worth contacting your customs department & asking them how it works in South Africa.
If you order from an online store you'll get it cheeper anyway.

RE: how stupid is this?
I had a DX 2.0 that was sweet that I could have kept that I was going to put in my cat. After hearing any story like that multiple times I didn't want to take the chance. I have seen videos of people running them with no problems but I cant afford a mistake like that.

Alright, let's go through this again. Most of the early 2.4 Gig radios work great when you're running on dry land but the reflection of the signal on the water is what seems to be the problem. Things like tuned pipes sticking up out of the hull or use of carbon fiber also created a wall that the signal can't get through.
When I've seen boaters lose radio contact in less than 200 feet I felt that no thanks, I'll stick with my FM radios until they get the bugs worked out.

RE: how stupid is this?
We had 2 cases hear of spectrum/2.4Gig problems.
One was a DX3 (besides the redikulas price) was in a 7.5 tunnel. No matter how the chap mounted the RX (even building a enclosure on top of the boat) it would not give more than 50 meter of range on the water. On land up to 100 meter. He investigated and apparantly it was to do with the fact that the RX is getting a screwed up second signal through the water. Well needlees to say he took it back to LHS.
The other was a JR DX9 in a carbon fiber 3.5 tunnel. It worked fine in his previous GRP boat but in the carbon it would launch and failsafe imidiately. Moved the aerial to outside the carbon and seems to work fine now. Being a helie radio I would imagine it would have range no problem.
We have currently 5 Futaba 6ex radios in use in the club in various boats (Nitro and gas) and not one problem from day one.
Just my 2 cents

RE: how stupid is this?
I used to run Spektrum on my M11, switched to the Airtronics module instead, I thought the spektrum pro was OK until I had my first glitch in a race (it started hooking right for no reason or going into failsafe - not a battery or wiring issue, it was all checked). I had constant problems with the standard spektrum receivers. The Spektrum pro is better, but still not perfect. I tested the Airtronics DSSS system the same day I was having problems with the Spektrum pro and had no issues, on the same water same conditions. No more Spektrum for me. Even Spektrum don't recomend it on water. I asked Airtronics tech support about their module for the M11 & they said there's no problems running their system over water. I tested it in gas & FE boats.

RE: how stupid is this?
I just had an evperience with the spektrum PRO system. Only had one glitch, but I called Horizon Hobbies Tech. Support and they told me "they do not recommend Spectrum in boat" It isn't that there is a problem with the radios, it's just the way Spektrum works. I am a die hard JR fan and wanted to keep my Z-1 transmitter, so I bought the Spektrum Pro Module and converted it over. Still Horizon told me not to use it on the water. They tell me that the water will reflect the signal if spray, roost, or another boat gets between you and the receiver. I was lucky and changed all mine back to 75mhz. Futaba transmitters jump frequencies 100 times per second, and I am told that this is what makes them work in the boating world. I don't know anything about the Airtronics radio systems.
