Problem starting

Im new to glow and still learning
I have problems starting my super tigre 90, Its a plane engine converted to marine.

What happend is when i last used it i used 3 drops of after run oil in the carb and head and then stored it for 2 weeks and today i tried to start it it fired up then stalled, It will not start now.

I tried a new glow plug and my glow starter was working.

What i noticed is that when i took the glowplug out and turned the engine over you should get a spray of fuel out of the head but there wasnt anything comeing out but was spraying out of the carb.

Does any of you have an idea whats wrong

RE: Problem starting

Are you turning it in the right direction, if you look at the shaft of the motor it should turn counter clockwise (anti clockwise).

Yes im starting it in anticlockwise

If you have a good plug and compression then you don't have enough fuel supply to the engine. Look for a pinched line, cut line or a restriction in the carb needle. You can prove my theory by putting raw fuel direct into the carb and then try starting it. Don't put so much fuel in that you flood the engine. A few drops should do it.

RE: Problem starting

Ive also done that

I think my carb needs setting, I now have fuel comeing out of the head when i start it, but there is a huge amount comes out instead of a spray.

I have no info or manual on the engine, Can anyone give me any tips or info on setting the carb, Its a super tigre 90

RE: Problem starting

Clarify "I have fuel coming out of the head". There shouldn't be fuel any where near the exterior of the cylinder head if the glow plug is tight. If you ran the engine a few days ago and it ran OK, did you mess with the needle valve? What were you doing when you ran it last? Was the engine running free with no cooling or in a boat in the water. Normally if you ran the engine and it ran OK you would not have to adjust the needle valve. On the other hand, if you overheated the engine you could have blown the head gasket. That would explain the "fuel coming out of the head" and as a result, no compression and no start.

It ran perfect when i last used it, and when i used it the other day it wouldnt start.

I asked my son if he had touched it, and he said he tried to start it and he adjusted the screws so i assume it will need resetting

I need the settings for the super tigre 90, ive done a search but cant find the carb settings

Typically 2 - 3 turns open on the high speed needle is a good starting point. You'll have to run the boat in the water to fine tune it. Do not ever ever ever, try to tune the engine without a load, out of the water. You may get advice to the contrary, but unless you have another 90 available for a spare rod, piston and sleeve, don't do it.

I ve tried that still no joy
He adjusted the high speed adjuster and the slow speed mixer

Do you know the settings for this carb

A general rule of thumb, DON'T EVER MESS WITH THE LOW-SPEED IDLE!!!!!!!!!!!! OK, I got that out of the way. Seeing how you or someone else might have, the other rule is take the low-speed out level with the end of the throttle arm if it has been messed with.
On most carbs, 3 turns out on the high-speed needle should get it started.

Thank you all

Ill give it a go tomorrow

RE: Problem starting

bry my advice is try starting it out of the boat with your plane prop on it till you get it running!!then put it in the boat and dont move the needles again lol!!,ive just moded my sc 61 plane engine i used a cooling coil for mine!!.the most likely culprit is the low needle setting id try 3 turns out and see how it goes the high needle valve id say try 2 1/2 turns out but if it starts and then dies its probably the low needle setting ,i had a similar problem when i got this engine (no book) but after a little tinkering it worked great!!.any pics of the mods you did or the boat your putting it in?have a look at my thread (new mono scratch built).also try a search on your engine you might find something on the net maybe even a downloadable manual!!

hi bry i just did a search in the glow engine section and theres a thread on the st g90 engine some on there say the low needle setting could need to be out as much as 4 turns maybe more to start it!! apparently its a common thing with these engines have a look at it its called st g90 problem ,it may help you a bit!!.

Still no luck starting? Try this:
Remove the fuel line and remove the glow plug.

Turn the engine over with the starter for several seconds. This is to thoroughly expel any fuel from the crank case. It should be turning at a relatively high RPM. Also, turn the boat upside down when you are spinning it with the starter. Make sure all of the fuel is out of the crankcase.

Check the glow plug to confirm you have a bright yellow glow.

Put 2 drops of fuel directly into the cylinder through the glow plug hole. Reinstall the glow plug and put 3 - 4 drops of fresh fuel directly into the carburetor. Do not reattach the fuel line.

Open the carb barrel about 1/4 to 1/2 open.

Confirm that the starter is turning the engine in an anti clockwise direction as viewed from the rear of the boat.

Attempt to start the engine. It should fire and run for a few seconds.

If this is successful, reattach the fuel line, close the high speed needle all the way and reopen it 2 and 1/2 turns.

Make sure you have fuel in the line to the carb and try to start again. If it doesn't start, you likely have a fuel flow restriction or a hole in the fuel line.

RE: Problem starting

Sorted chaps

I took the engine from the boat and when i turn it over, it didnt have much compression so i took the head / piston and rings off and couldnt see anything wrong.

When i fitted it back together it had more compression, so i can only think that the rings had stuck in the grooves, Thats why there was so much fuel comeing from the carb and exhasut whilst trying to start it.

Fitted it back together in the boat and instantly it started, After adjusting the carb.

Thank you all
