converting a airo engine

is it posible to to convert and airo engin without a lathe i have seen pepole put a copper coil around the head with a hose clip and water cooled crank case would this work and how do i make a fly wheel ?

There used to be something available called a cool clamp...but I think it was spelled wrong...Kool Klamp?? Kool clamp??...something like that.

Anyhow, it was a small jacket that wrapped around the head of an aircraft engine that allowed cooling water to cool the engine. I used one on my small rigger for awhile...using an OS .10 FSR aircraft engine in it.

I don't see why the coils would not work, but I don't think they will have the contact area of the kool clamp (see pic).

Push, sure. How fast is the question. A .28 aero engine typically has less power than a sport .21 marine engine. For example, the OS .28 FSR engines had .8 hp. The OS .21 RG-M is listed at 1.7 hp. They also are not designed to run at the RPMs that most marine engines can handle.

i said 28 because ther was one chep on ebay but i let it go i would need to get a second had engin and ime loking for a sport engine or a airo i can convert

What it when you get a second hand motor off of ebay.I'd picked up a thundertiger pro.21 for 36 dollars and the out put shaft bearing seal is bad.Theres time you can find deals and not.You need a motor at has over 1.8hp and topend rpm 33.000-40.000 to move a 30" boat. You havent stated what boat you have?!

RE: converting a airo engine

Not quite true misshydro. I would be happier with more torque and slightly less RPM so I could spin a larger prop. It also depends on the kind of boat being built. A PT or tug wouldn't be good for a 30K+ RPM engine to be dropped in to. By the same token, a 12K RPM four stroke aircraft engine wouldn't be a good choise for a hydro. Until rob crash24 lets us know what kind of boat he is working on, telling him what to power it with would be a guess, and they are usually wrong.

I AM GOING TO USE AN OS77DUCTED FAN ENGINE CONVERTED FOR MARINE IN MY SONS 1/8 MILLER AMERICAN, IT SPINS A BYROFAN AT 22,000 RPM AND RUN ABOUT 5 HP. ILL HAVE TO FIGURE OUT WAT PROP BUT I THINK IT WILL HAVE PLENTY OF POOP.

I WOULD'NT BOTHER WITH THAT HULL IT LOOKS LIKE ABS AND BY THE TIME YOU GET IT NITRO READY YOU WILL PROBABLY FALL OUT OF LOVE WITH IT, KINDA ON THE TOY BOAT SIDE OF THINGS MAYBE.

GIVE IT A GO IT MAY BE A GOOD TEST AND LEARN BOAT,, AND HAVE SOME FUN!!!!!!!

Fast isn't in the equation for that hull and engine combination. As the F16Man said, it will be a good learn and have fun boat. If I was to guess at the speed I'd say 30 KPH on good water and 45 KPH going down hill with a tail wind.

thats good enuf for me. will it need the rubber mounts and all that ? can i just mount it on alumineum and screw it in to the wood blocks ?

RE: converting a airo engine

RUBBER MOUNTS WILL HELP VIBRATION AND YOUR RADIO WILL LIKE THAT BETTER BUT NOT TO FLEXABLE SO THAT YOUR ENGINE DOES'NT WALK AROUND AND WIPE OUT YOUR DRIVE SHAFT OR CABLE!!!!

RE: converting a airo engine

rob i used a.60 sc aero engine on my boat 3 ft long and it did 30 pluss submerged drive i got the flywheel to match and water cooled it using coils.pm me if your interested as its doing nothing right now!!.this engine will give you good speed for your boat as is if you went surface drive id say 40 pluss easy.it starts easy using a plane starter and v belt.just needs the plug loosening to start it as it has high compression then tighten back up when its running and off she goes.

RE: converting a airo engine

30 and 40 what? Certainly not 40 MPH with a surface prop. My Wild thing with a MAC .21 on 60 % nitro, surface prop and very little boat in the water tops out at 47 MPH. The MAC .21 is light years ahead in power compared to the OS.28 that is being considered.
Realistically 20 to 30 MPH is the best that combo will do.
