Weird Performance from engine
I stuffed my 1/12 Miss Elam into a wave last week and ever since that day my engine has been acting funny. Of course, when I stuffed it, water came through the cowl and killed my engine instantly. I retrieved it and pulled the plug and cleared the chamber. Everything seemed fine so I cleaned it up and dried everything off and refueled it. I fired it up and threw it in the water only to find out that the stub shaft set screw on the flex shaft ferrule had backed out and galled up the shaft pretty darn good. I called it quits and took her home to do repairs.
A few days later I went out to test everything and my boat started acting funny. At first it was acting like I was only running her at 3/4 throttle. It eventually opened up at little bit and started to run somewhat faster. Then as I was bringing her by for a close pass, the throttle started to slow all the way down to idle then it would die. I had the boat repeat this to me three times in a row. I'm puzzled. I have since torn the engine completely down and all appears to be in great working condition. What gives? Not to mention that for some reason I was taking on more water than usual. Could it be possible that water is flinging into my carb from the flywheel? Any ideas? <div id="refHTML"></div> |

ummmm,
its a possibility, but first, have you tried a new glow plug? Dan. |
RE: Weird Performance from engine
Ya I would try to find out the water leak deal,,, put her in the bath tub and push down on the engine to force water into the hull thru any cracks or seams , some water is normal but if the flywheel is picking it up you are sure to have flameouts or misfires.........

Also try changing out your fuel lines ... sounds like you may have a nick in one of them..... Just a guess

I have not been able to run it yet but I have done some modifying. I have added an air filter element in order to help keep water out of the carb. I know that it isn't necessary but it should help keep the carb dry. The black air filter assembly actually has no actual filter in it but is there more or less as a shield. Hopefully I can run it in the next couple of days and check everything out. My buddy just picked up a new Vegas Duece and is dying to go break it in and wants me to go as he has never had to break in a nitro engine. Maybe I'll bring my Elam and do some testing. Does anyone have any bad experiences with adding an air filter? Thanks guys for all of your help.
P.S. - Hopefully the pictures upload. In the pics are a few different air filter configurations that I am thinking of running. |

RE: Weird Performance from engine
should be fine i mean they run just fine in a buggy or truck with air filters. the only thing is that most people willcomplain about a boat not really needing one since there is no dust or dirt on the water. the way i figure it, a little castor oil on the filter will stop the water scince oil and water dont mix, i plan on using one on my boat.

RE: Weird Performance from engine
check to see if the barrel of the carb has in and out movement the little screw can come loose . Also check to see if the linkage is loose on th carb.
Good luck |
RE: Weird Performance from engine
Yeah, I checked those as well and all were good. Thanks though!

Sublime
Is it still giving you problems with the throttle responce?? or the changes you made help? Solex227 |
RE: Weird Performance from engine
Water does not compress too well...if you sucked in a bunch of water at full throttle, you may have bent/damaged something in the engine.
