Engine Comparison... Help?
 

Hey guys, so i own 2 shockwave 36s, and i was running one of them in salt water.
Long story short- engine is seized and im currently ripping the engine apart and going to redo it.
MEANWHILE im looking at just buying another engine all together.... I HAD the stock .32 Dynamite engine in before.
i was thinking of putting an OS 21VZ-M Turbo.

The old Dynamite engine was a .32 engine

NOW thats the old stock engine that is stuck or "frozen".... now the new engine that i would like to buy is the OS engine.

Now guys, what should i do here??? As some of you probably know, these boats are tricky to handle at top speeds...
this Newer OS engine is about 50 grams lighter, and has about 10k more top end RPM than the stock Dynamite Engine.
So what would give a better engine to this boat?? should i spend the time and fix the old engine...? or should i spend some $$$ and
buy the new OS engine...?
Any idea/thoughts will help me decide guys...

You can also go with an O.S. .32 as one more option as you're going to find out that the .21 will need a new motor mount fabricated. That engine is still classified as a sport engine but better than the stock Dynamite
As far as the poor handling at speed, that's an easy fix. The problem lies in the Pro Boat placed the trim tabs too far out so when the boat is up on plane, the trim tabs aren't or barely touching the water and become ineffective. Move them closer to the strut.

Ron, i checked the OS website and there is no .32....?
what would be some of the possibly engines you would use for this?????

That's odd as they must have discontinued it! I didn't find it on Tower's site either.

hmmmz.... well Ron...
im having quite a time trying to get my old engine opened up... :( should i just ditch it for spare parts for my other boat and buy a new engine for this one?

That's not my decision to make if you know what I mean. You can try to rebuild it, replace with the same or purchase a new one from another manufacturer. Going with the last one will involve possibly a lot of work in fabbing up a new mount, a new throttle linkage, possibly a new flex cable but where the real fun may be is in putting in a new exhaust system.
Now, if you really want it to haul butt, Nova Rossi has a wicked .28 but may be a bit more than the hull can handle especially if you're having handling problems now. What the price tag is I don't know but you can contact Glenn Quarles from his site, www.novarossi.us . You won't find it on his site, he really needs to get it up to date.

There are a few members here have dropped an OS .46 in their TC-31's just as a side note.

Right now Glenn has a 5 port Nova Rossi .21 for around $215, that might be an option, but as Ron was saying, the modifcations to make it work might be more than you want to do.

Hi Fastpepper. I think your best bet is to get a replacement .32 Dynamite. I just saw a new one go for cheap on ebay. Retail I think there $120. An O.S. .32 puts out a little less power and thats if you can find one. Next option being the O.S. 21 race engine that I think you kinda got your eye on will need a starter for sure and I doubt you will be able to use your old flywheel ,collet , mounts or exhaust system. I'm going with the O.S .46 for my SW , but it also is requireing a complete redo. Ron suggested a Novarossi .28 to me as well. Really nice but kind of expensive. Check out a coulple SW threads on this site, there is talk about a guy who can rebuild and mod a .32 Dynamite for a reasonable price.
I'd like to see you put that O.S. .21 in it and post us all on the results. It was my second choice and I'm curious.

this rossi engine is super fast... maybe even a little bit too fast... ill just have to keep off the throttle a little more, so i wont run the engine that hard right? cant be BAD for the engine... maybe even get a longer life out of it...?
anyways... its a straight rear exhaust, so ill have to mod the exhaust a little bit... but w.e... :P

Yes...

And don't base you decisions on what the manufacturers post about their engines. The numbers are pretty much BS, unless you are comparing two engines made by the same manufacturer...then they are useful for comparing the two engine.

The ewngine is made to be set up for a clutch. The problem is that Thunder Tiger's clutch has problems with frying bearings.
We have sport engines like the Dynamite and TT which are basically converted plane motors then we have ones that are timed for boat use which a lot of times includes a larger bore carb.

because its an SG crank designed for cars and trucks.
you can fit a marine flywheel and the collet but it will need modification first.

In the old days, we're talking 60's thru 70's here. Nitro marine engines as we know them today were still being developed, and it was common to use airplane engines with a cooling clamp around the head. Not so today. Hardly anyone uses plane engines or any aircooled engine larger than a .12 that I know of. Unless your trying for a retro look...
Theres a good selection of affordable marine engines out there. That Novarossi thats mentioned before is one of the hottest engines out there now and would smoke that dynamite .32 you had...</span></span></span>

i just realy like the look of the engine, and that its the same side exhaust that the stock dynamite.32 was. so it would be easier that way....
and wouldn't this .46 win over the rossi .28?

we don't normally use or go by the specs since there are some companies that seems to exaggerate.

but just for fun.

the TT .46 = 2.46HP @ 23000 rpm ($200).
the NR .28 = 2.87HP @ 34000 rpm ($250) and
the NR .21 (5 port) = 2.8HP @ 38000 rpm ($215).

hmmm.... but didn't in another thread on nitro engines decide that lower size engines like the .21 ( and maybe even the .28 ) didn't have enough TORQUE to turn the prop size needed for this boat? and the .46 could actually increse the size of prop substantially?
just my thoughts on that.... :P also notice the max typical rpm noted. this is probably a first sign that it has lower torque and just higher rpm...?

in a way, yes.
normally with more torque you will turn a bigger prop for sure.
rpm posted are not the max rpm's.

I don't know what size prop you are looking at turning?

I would say that either the NR .21 or .28 will get that SW 36 going like snot.

and in all fairness I don't think you would be disappointed with the TT .46, in the end it all comes down to your decision.
an engine with the proper crank or an engine with an SG crank that will need you to modify a flywheel or find someone that makes one.

what ever your decision is, I am sure you will gave fun.

im so happy! now i just have to get the TT engine... i think i will go for this engine because of the bigger prop... so it wont cavitate as much... and it will jump out of the hole faster... :) cornering will be better too...?
im going to move the trim tabs closer in and then move the battery beside the fuel tank. :)

Hey Fastpepper , did you find where you can get that that TT.46 ? How much was it ? What about all the accessories? I'm interested. To me it looks like a great engine for the shockwave.
