Hi Ben

The original plans have details on both fixed and retractable LG. But I recommend moving them one wingrib outwards from what the plan says. (I did not, and it left me with about half an inch from the tip of the prop to the ground, using a .91 4stroke with 14" prop) This would give you a wider wheelbase, and makes the model more stable on ground. And it gives you the opportunity to extend the lenght of the struts for better groundclearance.

I have a buildthread on my webpage (http://www . fjernstyrt . net/joomla/index.php?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=0&func=view&catid=7&id=2428) (remove the spaces in the domainname) It's in norwegian, but has a couple of picture from how I build up the wheelwells.

Hope this helps

Including a picture of my Ultra Sport 1000. It has a geat running Super Tigre 2300. A bisson muffler and a regulator pump and pulls a APC 16x8 prop. It has Robart mechanical retracts and is covererd in monokote.
It is about two or three years old and is the, 'Cadillac of the sky.' I don't beleive there is any other RC plane that flies as good as this thing. I know that is an opinion, but that is mine. I read a lot about the 2300 being a sorry motor, but if it's a Italian made motor to get it to run properly the carb. barrel must be changed to the updated one. Super Tiger part no. SUPG4211 throttle barrel, about $15.00. Change this and get set for a totaly different motor experience...Don't believe all the junk about the big block S.T."s All they need is a new carb. barrel and another chance...

I'm extremely excited right now guys. I just bought US 60 NIB kit from a guy for $80. It will be my first kit build but absolutely can't wait. My 30% Edge 540 ARF build will have to put off for a bit, lol!

Quick question, what is the overall concensus on the gear? Taildragger or Tri? All my planes I've ever had are tail draggers, so just wondering what most people prefer on the US 60.

Egan
I really like the trike setup on my US40 I just wish there was room for retracts with the trike gear. I have 3 US60 kits and the first is going to be trike. The second is going to be tail dragger with retracts. and the third a backup kit

Anyone have any comments with regard to the aileron set up in an Ultra Sport 60? Plans show the single servo. My US1000 and US40 Plus had a servo in each wing. I have noticed most of the photos in this forum have no individual wing servos. I was just thinking of getting a larger servo if I stick to the single as in the plans, but I welcome anyones input to this.

Thanks

A standard servo in the center of this wing will perform just fine. I would prefer to run standard with 6vlts because it will center better, and be a lot faster. But the standard stock setup works fine.

I have used separate servos in my US40 and US60 wings as I get paranoid about hidden interference in the fuselage with either something onto the servo or binding of the torque rods.I have two servos mounted in the outermost sheeted center section bay on the bottom of the wing with 4-40 threaded rods and captive ball connectors to the servo and horns. I can then play around with flaperons on my radio as well. And yes, those are non-standard ailerons I put in with my latest rebuild.

Well I have 17 flights on my US .60 ,every one of them has ended in a DEADSTICK! errrr, the engine quit running. and I can honestly say, it,s the best DEADSTICKing airplane there is. lol I,ve even had to set it down in the corn a few times, and it just knocked the corn down.
ST .90 is giving me fits ,new liner, ring, bearings and carb I give, and cry Uncle , and am asking Santa for a new GMS.76. or a Saito 1.00 .After 17 dead sticks I soooo want to fly this plane.

I would go for one servo in each wing. Makes adjustments easier from the radio. I have used the original tray for the aileronservo to mount the flapservo on my us60. But again... the flapmod is a waste of time in my opinion.

Im intruding...and I know it but wanted to chime in with my U.S. 1000 50th flight today. No failures of any kind, love the plane and the folks at the field love it too, which is a huge complement! The thing is a rocket with that OS 1.60!

Hehe. no problem cde. A great looking scheme you got there I can't wait to start the build of my 1000.

Bob, we're awaiting Frost Winter. Temperatures around freezingpoint, but no snow yet.

Wish they would rekit the US 1000 again. It was the best plane I ever had. I built it before the OS 1.60 came out. Clarence Lee gave a glowing review of the MDS 1.48 in RC Modeler and I bought one from Horizon Hobby. It was the worst engine ever. They eventually sent me two replacements and finally figured the problem was with the carb. They sent a carb from someother brand engine and it worked pretty good for a while. But one day I was flying, the engine died. Got it back close to the runway, but it was coming in real hot. Could not turn it away from the safety fence. Caught the wing on a post and it literally exploded...... but what a great airplane....

eBay can be a good source sometimes. That was how I got my two kits

When you guys are talking about the OS 1.60, I'm assuming you're talking about the two stroke 1.60? Will it fit on the US 1000?

It should......I had a MDS 1.48 and it fit fine. The OS in only minimally larger at the most. The OS was not out when I bought my engine. I had a hard time finding a ST2300 at the time and is why I ended up with the MDS which was pretty bad.....but Horizon Hobby did support it all the way.... The OS 1.60 should be a super engine for the US 1000....

Yes the OS 1.60 two stroke, it fits on the plane (some argue a little overkill).. me included but if you want a rocket like I did then???

How would a 1.80 4 stroke work in the US1000?

The 180 four stroke would be an excellent choice. Like the 160 two stroke, it would be a little overkill, but that makes it just right.

I suppose it would fly it just fine... I know that my 1.60 was tight (a little). If you go on the OS web site or Tower, look at the 1.60 dimensions and compare to your 1.80 f/s. I've flirted with shoe horning a YS 170 in this plane... but the cost was just too much for me

Well, I got a US40 for Christmas from my wife! I'm going to start the build soon and am trying to select the motor. I'm thinking that the OS .55AX would be a good choice. Has anybody else used one of these motors on this plane? I'd REALLY like to put one of the new Jett .56's on this bird, but that's an extra $200. Also, I don't like the idea of a single aileron servo. Anybody use dual aileron servos on the US40? My US60 has two aileron servos, and I seem to remember them being called for in the plans. I built that plane over 10 years ago though. How about retracts? I have retracts on my US60, but they're a nightmare. They're the wire type. I'd prefer struts that won't bend.

The 55ax would be killer on this plane... mine flies great with a 46ax. The single servo wing works great, but I will try dual aileron servos on my next one.
