RE: Lets see your ULTRA SPORTS !!!!!!!!!!!
I wish I could show you pictures of my US 60 that I bashed into a twin using two OS .40 FX's spinning 9x8 prop on 20% nitro. It had mechanical retracts; it was FAST and flew great.
I lost it when I had a false peak detection on my charger. Thinking it was fully charged, I lost it several minutes into its final flight. I have owned 3 US 60s in the past 12 years and each of them has met an untimely event early in their lives. The last one and final US 60 that I'll ever own lost its elevator during some spirited flying. I have an Ultra Sport curse! Never again.

In reply to JPMacG. re retracts.
I have had quite a few US's over theyears, 40, 60 and the 1000, some with retracts, some nose leg fixed, some tail draggers.
I agree with all- the Ultra Sport family is undoubtably the greatest group of sport aircraft ever.Cheers to Great Planes for re-kitting the US 60 but daggers for stopping production of all in the first place.
There is nothing better than seeing a UltraSport with its legs tucked up.Weather it flies better, I don't know but it certainly looks fantastic.
I usually fly from a grass strip and would only consider using trike retracts on a sport model. I have always used Dave Brown retracts(mechanical) but I am not sure if they are still available. If it is a scale aircraft or flying from tarmac you will get away with mains only but trike is the way to go. Looking at the set up of any u/c unit, the mains on a tail dragger are in front of the CG. With a nose leg the mains are behind the CG. Therefore on landing with a trike the only weight and inertia or G Force is from the rear of the aircraft, the light, tail and immediately on touch down the weight is transferred to 3 legs(not that the noseleg would be taking much weight) On a tial wheel model the legs being in front of the CG take the full weight and G Force of the model. If the legs have enough flex to absord this force they may be too weak. If too strong they only transfer the force to another spot on the airframe that may fail. I would reccomend trike gear for retracts and fixed main for tail draggers(looks better)
To see any retract design Warbird(model or full size) or any scale aircraft flying with fixed U/C instead of retracts is not pretty, but to land these models safely needs practice and skill.
If you follow the full size aircraft design, I can think of no commercial aircraft(maybe an odd home built) since the days of WWII (1940-50s) that has main wheel retracts and a tail wheel set-up.Tricycle UC. either fixed or retracts made landings a little easier. Also if pilots of full size Cessnas to Boeing 747s made landings as hard as some of our model landings, there woud be a lot more aircraft scrap heaps around.
Definately go ahead with retracts but if not flying off tarmac, use a tricycle setup.Less hassle and more flight time.
I attached some photos of my US but they went missing. Attached is latest US1000.
I normally fly of grass and there is nothing better than a Ultra Sport with its legs up. WEather or not they fly any better, i don't know but they certainly look good.

Thanks Misterv and Cjbotox. I appreciate your advice. We had our club meeting tonight and I was given a second US 60, this one is framed up and has Dave Brown retracts installed. I just need to finish up the build and cover it. So now I'm thinking I may build two - one with retracts and one without.

This was my second US 40, modified by lowering the stab one inch. It seems to make the rolls more axial. This was destroyed in a crash last spring; dumb thumbs. I need to warm up on a slower plane in the spring, and I didn't. But I have a US 60 to be built soon.
This is my first try at loading a picture; hope it works.
Later: Better pictures in next post.

Sure is a neat way to do it though!
The plan was to sell the US60 once recovered to help put $ toward either a 30cc or 50cc gasser (or a scale build with a saito radial). But now that its done I am reluctant!

I have just finished my Ultra Sport 60. I have had the kit on the shelf since 1990. Pylon Racing takes up a lot of time. Some variations, I made a foam wing, rather than glue all those bits together. I had to save some time. I did not want a clear canopy/empty cockpit. I laid up a glass replica inside the original, I still have the original. The fuselage/tail is glassed and painted. All of the trim colours and wing is Ultracoat. Taildragger with Robart air retracts. Webra 60 engine. Tettra bubbleless tank.
Pictures show glass canopy, joining the wing halves, aligning wing and tail, end result.

How do you shape a foam wing? Is this made from shaping a piece of foam from scratch? I am wondering how this saves time. Or did you just purchase the foam wing?
I am clueless about foam core wings, obviously.

RE: Lets see your ULTRA SPORTS !!!!!!!!!!!
I will say i originally thought my ultra sport was a lil uglu in the nose of the fuse but it did fly like a dream was an awesome airplane design. But will say there have been others the super kaos 60 from sig and OH yeah The original Super Lucky Fly Supreme II from Johnny Casburne omg my dad loved that plane crashed it 5 times never would let it go the 6th time he parked it in the family room 7 years later i put it back together for him for his his birthday when i was 17 . He gave it to me for all the work i put in it and it was a super super flyer as well as the very rae corsair akro knight was an import model kit from japan sold thruy circus hobbies another excelent flyer there are so many out there though even the original top flight contender had its place with that big ugly stick airfoil. anyways of topic but yes the original ultra sport 60 from gp wqas an awesome awsome air plane cant go wrong with one of those.
Anyway guys anybody ever want to discuss the original rc planes from the day let me know i appreciate and even love the new 3d planes but its a different animal all together ya know.. Happy Flying guys!!!!! Randy [email protected]
