I was digging around in my old photos today and found some of my very first Shrike. I built this in 2008 in the hotel when I first moved to Champaign to work for Spektrum.

The date on the photos is 25 July 2008.

Yesterday I cut lettering for my big Shrike using my laser cutter.

Next step will be to change the nose door to two doors so it can't hit the ground on a munged taxi.

Shrike 40 - electrified. I am trying to find a high RPM 60-size elelctric motor for my 40-size Shrike. Anyone have suggestions? Most 60-size outrunners are fairly low rpm and use very large props. Trying to find some thing that will turn a 60-size electric motor with a max - 12" prop. Maybe that isn't practical???

Default Anybody still flying these?

Just finished framing up a kit I've had for about 10 years. Going electric with the G46. 13,400 RPM on a 12X8 prop with a 5S 3,300 mAh battery pack. Should hit 101 mph if my calculations are correct.

All the time! This past summer mine was my most-flown model.

Nice Shrike Andy! Like the retracts and larger tail section. Have you ever put an AS3X in a Shrike? I ordered two more AR636 receivers, one for the current Shrike build. Thinking the stabilization will make hand launches much simpler.

I might for next summer, just to play with it. It really doesn't need it - it grooves nicely.

I know I'm a lot late to the party but I must say, this is a fantastic shrike club! All the references to the build threads are most helpful. Sorry I didn't find this thread until my 10+ year old kit was already framed up. There are a few things I would have done differently. Like the thicker R1 ribs (I have a 3 axis CNC router and could have made replacements) and the wider tail for more elevator authority on landing. I did see someone mount the elevator servo in the hollow space behind F4 and did make that modification before covering the fuselage. Getting more weight aft is good for the CG and eliminates / simplifies the linkage passing through the area where the magnets are holding the hatch down.

For the elevator authority at landing, I'm thinking the shrike is at it's most basic a flying wing with elevator assist for pitch control. Has anyone tried "elevon" mixing? Mixing the ailerons with elevator in the transmitter as is done on flying wings without an elevator? I'm thinking that would give more elevator authority at landing.

Again, great thread. Sorry I'm so late getting here :-( Control surfaces are hinged and covered. Need to put breather holes in the bottom to let the heat/ pressure out of the fuselage and I'll be on to finishing up with the rest of the covering. All up weight is calculated to be 3.5 lbs. Static thrust should be 5.19 lbs on a 10x8 prop for 101 mph at 1 kw draw on the G46 motor (I'll need to keep that to less than 15 second bursts).

Mine can be flown on the tail only, as each surface has a separate servo.

They're not banking hard enough for those turns!

Good to know from someone with real life experience with these aircraft. I'll dial in a little more and re-render.

You want them 90 degrees over on a tight turn, 70+ for more gentle.

Here, watch the maiden flight:

I watched your maiden flight video several times already. Great maiden! Paid attention to the banking this time and I see what you mean. Went ahead and modified the bank angle and perhaps overshot.

Need to extend the approach, narrow the camera angle & follow the lead or 2nd place plane from the ground view to make it more realistic. That will take another render which is a couple hours. Renders happen while I'm downstairs in the airplane room covering.

Went to the hobby shop today to get the fiberglass for the wing roots and the covering. Think I'll go with the blue, green and white covering. Video helps know what it's going to look like at the field.

You'll want to bump it up to 1080p60 and full screen to see the Shrikes up close:

Made some updates to the banking and added some high speed low flying.
