i would like to know if it is possible to increase the filesize for an avatar. while i know the idea is not to bring full size immages in for avatars, 85x85 is like nothing and so is 7.5k. if you have an immage with many colors or a complicated immage that you think describes you or you really think belongs below your name, you have to make is either uber small or such low quality that it looks like poo. how about something like 100x100 and 10k? that is nice and even, and allows for higher quality immages or larger ones. that increase in size would only come out to about 1.6 mb extra space on the server and would make all 457 active members quite happy.

the reason for the limit has nothing to do with disk space on our side. the problem is slow download speeds.

If we went from 7.5k to just 12k then let's add this up.

12k x 20 user posts = 240k in avatar download.

on dial up this is over a minute per page waiting for the avatars to download. Not acceptable.

by using only 7.5k we limit the potential liability in slow downloads significantly. Our dial up users appreciate it.

yes there is. but why force dial up guys to use it when they might want to see the avatar. I've seen just about every kind of avatar fit perfectly within our limits.
