+1 on the 25% comment, But do keep in mind some radios are less expo on a + adjustment and others -

Everyone will have a different answer. I don't use expo but that is what I am used to.
Experiment and find what feels good to you.

I use quite a bit of expo on my airplanes... but no expo to "reverse" expo on my heli's (it would be negative expo for the JR based radios)

I always felt I was chasing the heli with expo...

try adding a bit of fly bar weight and lowering your expo... I think you might find the heli flies a bit better...

also, your headspeed needs to be in a good range... for a Trex, if the headspeed is too slow, it will fly like crap!

im just starting to remove the expo in my 450. i started out at 35 expo and 65% low rate in normal flight mode. i removed my flybar weights a few months ago and have been getting used to the quicker response of the cyclic. the first time i hit idle2, with no expo and 100% dual rate, i ended up hovering inverted at about 50 ft. i was VERY impressed with how my heli flew. I agree with missleman though, experiment and find the best settings for you. however, if you plan on going 3D, you dont want any expo and you want high rates.

I use 30% exp on rudder to help with not adding any when doing high collective moves

I use a DX7 also. You want to use positive expo on a DX7 to make it less sensitive around center stick. 30% to 40% on elev. and aile. is a good starting point. I just recently added some to the rudder as I'm doing flips and inverted hover and it seems to help keep the tail straight when moving the stick between positive and negative pitch. Finless has a couple of good videos at HeliFreak on expo and dual rates. I don't use dual rates- 100% across the board.

Like everyone said experiment and find out what works for you. I have a 450 V1/v2 and am currently using 15% I have not tried any 3d stuff yet still learning to fly basic FF & FFF all aspect of hovering etc.

ok my setup is now 20% expo on normal (for precision hovering) and 15% on idle 1 and 2 but I'm still using flybar weights. should I reduce the expo so when I remove the flybar weight I can handle it better? how much expo do you guys expect the flybar weights account for?? 5% 10%?? Thanks

I don't use expo on any of my helicopters. Ohh wait, I do use a little on the rudder of my T-Rex 600 but that is due to the Logictech 6100T gyro and the way it need to be setup. I learned on a little Axe CP with a cheap radio that did not have any way to adjust the expo. After learning on that and moving up to a T-Rex 450, I found it to be so stable and easy to fly I never needed to add any expo. So of the guys I fly with like to use quite a bit of expo so it is boils down personal preferance. Try some different settings until you find a setup that YOU like.

thanks for the info, I've decided to leave norm at 20% (mainly to hover in small spaces) and for idle up 1-2 I'm still deciding weather 10% or 20% and on the tail 10%.

if you decide to go 3D after removing your weights, i would recomend losing the expo all together on idle 2 at least. your going to need the lightning quick cyclic response for more aggressive 3D manuevers.

I finally got my setup defined; 5% cyclic and 10% on the rudder, 15% cyclic for normal

Having expo does not reduce the "lightening quick" response! There is a thread over at helifreak..it's a poll actually asking what percentage of expo people use. A LOT of the 3d'ers use a lot of expo....heck, Finless Bob uses 30% expo still.

are you sure your not thinking about servo travel rather than expo? at full throw, no, you wont lose the responsivness. but, say you only use half of your available throw, then you would. ultimatly it would really depend on other setup options as well. however, if your running with the stock Align motor and ESC, 13 tooth pinion, Align 325 carbons, and no flybar weights, it has been recommended to me to lose all expo for aggressive 3D. now i still keep expo in normal and idle 1 but for idle 2 with no expo, i find it to be more responsive for ME. again, it really comes down to personal prefrence. after a lot of experimenting, those are the settings that i found to fit my style. as i have found these settings to be effective, i would reccommend them to others. again, experiment, and find what feels right to you.

Pawraith: I agree it's definitely a personal decision! I too don't use any expo except on rudder. I was actually surprised when I read the poll and saw that Finless and some other 3d monsters (not saying Finless is a 3d monster...) use a lot of expo!

Not using EXPO only means that you smooth out the responsiveness of the servo so that it acts in a more linear fashion. Looking at the geometry of the TREX setup, I (personally) can't see why you would want to not run with some EXPO on your cyclic and rudder. I agree that it's a personal choice, but I like my cyclic and rudder inputs to be deliberate and not the result of an accidental twitch around the zero point of the sticks.

Also, I think that EXPO is a very good thing for new CCPM Heli pilots. When I started, I used up to 40% EXPO. Now, I am down to 25% and will probably drop that to 15 - 20% in the course of the 2009 flying season.

i guess i could see the point to putting a little bit of expo on the tail, maybe 10 to 15%, when doing 3D. maybe if you were trying to do a funnel for the first time and you need to have very subtle rudder control, expo may help there. but, i think you would want to find a happy medium so if you wanted, you could still whip the tail around at will, such as when doing some chaos. it does however give my the notion to add a very little bit of expo (maybe 5 to 10%) to my tail control, just to see if it helps me in the 3D regime.
