Saito 100's
I have 2 saito 100's
Both run on the same fuel Wildcat 15% nitro 18% lube.
Engine #1 flying with a 15 X 4 prop Max RPM 9,800 Engine always runs great
Engine #2 Flying with a 15 X 6 prop Max RPM 7,800 Engine has been unreliable/
Can 2 degrees in the prop pitch make a 2,100 RPM difference?
K.O.

RE: Saito 100's
Is the 15x4 a wide blade? if so they rev up pretty well, and if it is the wide blade a 2k rpm drop going to a 15x6 is possible. If you want to turn the 15x6, put some 30% heli fuel through it. However, dont 100% rule out something going on with the 2nd engine to make the drop, could be something mechanical, fuel setup, etc.

Why don't you switch the props from engine to engine and see how much the rpm chnges from 15x4w to 15x6? I have seen that the prop load for a 15x4w is close to the load for a 14x6 (run on my Saito 91). Switching from a 14x6 to a 15x6 should produce about an 800 rpm drop. So the 2000 rpm decrease you see looks like more than a prop difference.

Switching the props is a good idea. I'll try that and report back. Tonight I reset the valve clearance. They were only .001 to .002 loose so I doubt that could be the problem. I also double checked the servo throw and that was ok. I pulled the tank, replaced the fuel line. The clank works ok. The engine turns over with no bind and with good compression. I have never used 30% nitro but I may give it a try if everything else fails. Thanks for the tips. I'll keep you posted.

No I didn't. I switched the props but haven't had a chance to run the engine yet. I was busy flying my Northstar on the water for the 1st time las t saturday. All my spare time was tied up with that. Now that the weather is so hot I'm not going to do anything till the weekend.
Thanks for the inquire and interest. I will post the results soon as I run the engine.

I haven't given up on testing the 15 X 4 pitch prop. Its been so darn hot to mess with it. I'm going to the field tomorrow to try it. Will keep ya posted.

I'm sorry about the weather on your wedding day. A guy kid of gets over it but the Bride; thats another matter. Best wishes to you both. Not to rub salt in the wound we had a picture perfic day here. About 85 and 10 MPH out of the East. Took 3 planes to the flying field and brought 2 back the way I took them and the 3rd the engine flew off in flight. It was the 2nd flight on my Northstar and the engine came loose off the pod. Thankfully the engine held on by the fuel line and I was able make a good landing in the water. The Northstar is a seaplane by the way and we have a large pond ajacent to the flying field. We're pretty lucky. Not a lot of damage and I'll have it ready to go in a couple evenings.
As for the Saito 100 I had to use an old plastic spinner to fit the 4 pitch prop. Well the screw to hold the spinner on pulled through the nose of the spinner rendering it useless. I resorted to putting back on the 15 X 6 with the aluminum spinner and the engine ran about 8,900 to 9,000 RPM. last week it was a 1000 RPM less. Same gas, same glow plug, same prop, same everything. Go figure. Its still about 800 to 900 less than my other Saito but the 4 pitch prop probably is the difference. If anything else developes I'll pass it on.
Good luck on you marriage.

RE: Saito 100's
I just read in R/C Report where they tested a FA100GK and got around 9100RPM with a 15x6. I thought that seemed really low too, and it is about what you are getting.
Try flushing the engine and resetting the needles and see if that helps. Also, make sure your tappets are properly adjusted. You may want to post this in the Glow Engine forum to see if anyone has some better advice.

RE: Saito 100's
Good idea and thanks for the tip. I'll do that when I get some time. I did remove the carb, needle valves and set the valves. I found nothing in the carb and the valves were within .001 - 002. I'll keep working on it and post my findings.

I found a post somewhere when searcing for rpm readings for saito 100 to compare against my super custom 91 fs. The guy used the master airscrew 14-6 k- series and got 10400 rpm which seems fair sice I get 10000 on the same prop on my 91(using 15% nitro). Try this prop and you will see if your engine gives similar results as the above

RE: Saito 100's
What did you do to your .91 to make it a "super custom"?
