I have been meaning to ask , what is the idle speed that most consider to be an acceptable minimum? Isn't it going to be dependent on many factors like prop pitch, airframe drag and weight, field conditions? It seems everyone is shooting for 2000 rpms. However it seems to me that most engines will idle more reliably closer to 2500. I have found on rare occasion some that will idle at 1800 but most depends on the carb setup. For example a 10X6 at 2000 says 9.9mph but only .11 lbs of thrust , a 10X5 is 8.2 and .1 lbs, 10X4 6.6 and .09.

Jeffie, what mount are you using on your .46? It's so much bigger than my .40LA. Won't even fit between the arms of the OS mount.

Sorry so long getting back to you. The only mount Ihave for this engine is an adjustable one Ibelieve it is a Dubro. But any mount designed for the OS46SF should work.
On closer examination Ibelieve it may be a Great Planes adjustable.

Ihave the GP mount also. 40-70 size. Ihad a heck of a time drilling the holes for it, as the muffler mount sticks so far out over the mount holes. Finally drilled it upside-down then turned it over to mount it. I measured the width of the mount with the engine bolted on, and Icouldn't mount it in my 40 size trainer if Iwanted to. The firewall isn't wide enough. lol I hope my Tiger 2 (which arrives tomorrow) has a wider firewall. I'd hate to have to modify the whole nose to mount it.

I'm still breaking it in, 4 tanks through it, it's still tight at the top.APC 10X8, Cool Power 15% with castor added to 25% oil, Merlin hot plug.

The AV engines are not dainty. But they are built to dish it out and take it. That is why they have been packaged with trainers.

Iagree about the "not dainty". Seems to have a lot of power though. Igot 12200 with it still very rich.

I'm going to fly it on 5%. You recommend removing the shims?

Only you can determine that. Test and tune.

I'd be surprised if you had to do anything to an Aviastar .46 to get it running well on 5% other than installing a hot glow plug and fueling it up.

I hope it goes that well. It shakes a lot, things keep vibrating out of it...i.e idle stop screw, mount bolts, etc. I hope it settles down soon.

I'm having the same idle problems now too. Runs sweet on the top end, 13200 with an APC 11X6. No transition though. LSN seems to have no effect on the transition, It stutters, coughs, takes about7 seconds to get to full throttle. Best idle I can get is 3000. Could I have one of the wrong carbs?

Ireally wanted to maiden the Tiger this weekend. Looks like that will have to wait . You'd think they would have fixed all the engines by now. I've only had this one a few weeks. How long has this been going on?

Did the .53 have similar problems?

Wow. it's been a while since I posted that. Igot it back and put it in a Tiger 2. The plane never landed with the engine running. 12 flights, all deadsticks. The last one planted the engine about six inches down in the dirt. Broke the carb off. Good riddance. My experience with the Aviastar brand was not good. The .53 I bought broke the conrod on the second breakin tank. I just threw it in the trash with the .46. I'll stick with Magnum and YS.

I hope not too many new flyers buy this for their first glow engine. If they do I doubt they will stay in the hobby long.

Can't I just buy one of these .46 engines and break it in without all this changing of fuels and head shimming? I run Omega 15% with caster for the .46 OS AXII engine I have now.
Thank you very much.

Your Aviastar .46 should run fine on Omega 15% nitro fuel. I'd recommend trying a Fox RC Long glow plug w/ idle bar or an O.S. No. 8 plug. The 15% nitro content is a little high, so a medium/hot plug will likely run more reliably. A hot plug like an O.S. No. 6 (A3) may cause pre-ignition issues with higher nitro fuel.

Good luck!

I run McCoy MC59 or Enya #3 plugs in most of my engines which are both hotter than the plugs you listed with fuels ranging from 5% nitro up to 30% nitro and dont have issues with preignition or detonation. Car engines running at 35,000rpm or 4-strokes running at 12,500rpm don't matter. Just need to remember "Lean is Mean". If the engine is over compressed with higher nitro, you will need cooler plugs and/or less nitro. The cheapie engines tend to be under compressed so more nitro is tolerated. Truly though, the only way to determine what plug the engine needs is to try several plugs and using a tach take note of the results. The tach will tell you which plug works best.

And for the record, idle bar plugs aren't intended for Schnuerle ported engines. They are designed for use in cross flow ported engines.

Good luck getting one that runs. I gave up trying to get mine to work and gave it a friend. He put a different carb on it and it still would not keep running. The engine never completed a flight running. Try doing a search on You Tube and see if you can find many videos of the thing airborne. Then do a search on any other engine. All I can say is good luck.
