Yes, I'm tuning it in. Running a Cline regulator. Also I'm running an OS Type F plug.

Hmmm, APC 18x6W on 15% Coolpower heli fuel. 7800 max, backed it down to 7400. Elevation of 4327 feet. 85F or 90F Degrees. Why so low? Is it just because engine has only 5 or 6 tanks through it?
Got another here that doesn't turn up well. In fact I am getting the same EXACT numbers as you. I am going to put another gallon through her and if it doesn't pick up to a reasonable number I am going to check the cam timing. Saito has been known to miss on occasion and get it out by a tooth and when corrected they pick up as much as 1000 rpm's or maybe a little more. Mine runs flawless, just doesn't make the grunt it should on the top end. I've tried different fuel, different plugs, checked to be sure I was getting full opening on the throttle barrel, etc. She's just not making the power to spin an 18X6 over 7600.
How do you tell if it is out of time, are there marks on the gears (I didnt' see much in the Saito forum)? And assuming it's not a timing issue, any other suggestions besides "are you tuning it in or just running it up with a random needle setting?"

-Thanks

RE: Saito 180 performance

Yes there is a mark on the cam gear and the crank is held at TDC while the two gears are meshed. There are a number of methods to hold the cam in the correct phase while it is lowered into place. I personally use a razor blade which can be easily slid out after the cam and housing are lowered into place. I checked the cam timing on mine and it is NOT off so I am going to continue to run it in. It is slowly getting better as I am now able to get 8000 where I was only getting 7700 peaked. I am told that it could take another 3 to 5 gallons to get it up around 9000. Good luck with yours.

Yes experiment and problem solve your issue. I would start by taking the Cline off and running it upright with the tank mount right behing the engine. It could be as simple as bad fuel but how are we to know? Start with the simple things!

Thank you, will do. It's also nice to know that the engine frees up and runs better the more you run it. I'll definitely check the cam timing though.

I am putting a 180 in a TT 1/7th Sept Fury. The ARF comes with a 3 blade prop. What would be a good 3 blade prop??

The ARF comes with a propeller?

Who makes it? What size?

RE: Saito 180 performance

hi  a three blade will not give you the performance of a two blade-if i remember correctly it is low end low end torque that suffers

Just did my 180 with 16x8 and 30% heli 23% oil and static at 10,000 rpm. smokes like a *****
low end setting is 1/2 in from flush with arm and high end 3 turns. stock muffler.

Not a good idea. Not nearly enough prop.

So that nobody is mislead I'd like to comment on the low numbers posted by a couple of gents above in 2008, those "W" props turn hard. I tried an 18x8 APC-W on my SuperTigre 2300 Diesel conversion at about 7,300 is where it hit the wall. That's about 900 rpm below other brands the same size.

That`s 1`` too small a prop, might over-rev the engine and hurt it[X(]

IMO over-revving such a good 4-stroke may occur at rpm higher than 10.000. http://www.it4eds.com/blog/wp-conten...estionmark.png
