Saito 180 performance

APC 16x8, 9500 rpm, 20% heli fuel, saito plug. I will be posting readings with 18x6 next week.

its not much for a 180 engine

Tigil.
Not that bad 9500 on a 16x8 comes out at around 3.2hp.

it just look less then I thinking because I turn already this prop with my oldest YS 120 nearly this rpm
9200 with cheap power master 15%

30% nitro makes a thirsty beeotch. Chug-a-lug.:D

MenzS 18x6 and 10% nitro fuel 8600rpm. Pulls really nice;) I will try the APC 18x6W soon and some thrust measuring and report back the rpm and thrust.

RE: Saito 180 performance

Hi,
I did some flying and tach readings today. It was cold -5degrees celsius. Fuel was 20%oil castor/synthetic and 10% nitro.
The same MenzS 18x6 turned 8400rpm today and pulled 18,5LBS on my fishing scale. APC 18x6W turned 8100rpm and pulled 17,5LBS.
I think the lower number for today is because of the colder weather and my high oil fuel gets pretty thick;) and slowing things down.

When airborne I could not really tell which was the best prop but give a slight edge to the MensS pulling slightly better. Both these props are very good for hovering "training"[8D]

20/20 fuel, 18X6 Mezjlik, 2800 ft. of elevation and I'm getting 8500 usable rpm

Just got my 1.80 tuned today. It's got about 1/2 gallon through it. Wildcat 15% and MA classic 18x6 turned 8600RPM. Idled smooth at 1650 with glow heat, upped it to 2000 without heat. pulled 18 1/4 lbs on my thrust meter.
almost forgot. 40 degrees F.;)

RE: Saito 180 performance

Don't know if anyone reads this thread anymore, but thought I'd post this anyways. I need to run a Cline regulator on my 1.80, so I wanted to get it set up on the test stand befor going into the plane.
about 47 degrees F
wildcat 15%, 18%synth/castor blend
MA Classic 18x6
Cline regulator

8800 rpm
idled as low as 1350-1400 rpm, no heat (sounded like it wanted to stall, but ran for a full minute befor I turned it up to a smooth
1800 rpm idle. Idled at 1800 for 2 minutes, smack the throttle wide open, not a problem...8800 rpm.

It really likes the steady fuel pressure with the regulator.

RE: Saito 180 performance

Rex,
I have been useing them since 1995. Every engine that I have ever ran with a Cline responds that good. I have ran everything from a Saito .30 to a Saito Super Tiger 3000 on a Cline.:D The best set up ever with the Cline was with a Saito 1.0 Twin. That engine would idle @ 1700 for a half hour on 20/20 and never drop a cylinder.:D:D Too hear the crisp throttle responce of the little twin was something to behold.:D:D

RE: Saito 180 performance

I just traded for two 180s and tested them with 17X6 APC prop. Both engines came in at 9000 to run with this prop. Anyone that hasn't tried the 180 needs to give it a try. Idles great and transition is great. I must add that the Super Tiger 2300 will pull right with this engine but the transition isn't as quick.

Hum?? :) I don't think my Tach is broken but I did a static run up with an APC 17x8 prop on my Saito 180 and was turning 12690 rpm

RE: Saito 180 performance

Got my tach working correctly :D

17X8 APC prop 7800 rpm's static run up and running on the rich side
idle at 1650 rpm's with no glow heat
and idle down at 1470 rpm's with no glow heat :D

edit spelling

Sweet ok Ill post this up here. Toped out at 8670rpm with a Xoar 18x6 but still a bit rich. Not bad for this engine. Just put the Iron Bay Regulator back on and a Turbo Header first run in months so wanted to get the oil back in her.

Some of ya are pulling really good numbers. I hope mine gets up there someday :)

Oh yeah for those interested in throttle response on the 1.80 http://www.vimeo.com/1038668 I guess proof positive ehhh :)

RE: Saito 180 performance

APC 18x6w @8400rpm and 17x6@9400rpm and fuel is 10% nitro. Inverted in a 60-sized Diabolic funfly 3D. Hovers at less than 1/3 throttle and then pulls vertical like there is no tomorrow:D

RE: Saito 180 performance

Hmmm, APC 18x6W on 15% Coolpower heli fuel. 7800 max, backed it down to 7400. Elevation of 4327 feet. 85F or 90F Degrees. Why so low? Is it just because engine has only 5 or 6 tanks through it?

Michaelh 08-14-2008 05:24 PM

RE: Saito 180 performance

Thats pretty low. Dont know what could be wrong, thats hard to say. First question is are you tuning it in or just running it up with a random needle setting?

Got another here that doesn't turn up well. In fact I am getting the same EXACT numbers as you. I am going to put another gallon through her and if it doesn't pick up to a reasonable number I am going to check the cam timing. Saito has been known to miss on occasion and get it out by a tooth and when corrected they pick up as much as 1000 rpm's or maybe a little more. Mine runs flawless, just doesn't make the grunt it should on the top end. I've tried different fuel, different plugs, checked to be sure I was getting full opening on the throttle barrel, etc. She's just not making the power to spin an 18X6 over 7600.

RE: Saito 180 performance

My ASP 180 fs turns MenzS 18-6 at 9000 rpm on 15%, I think the Saito should do about the same
