Mini Funtana -electric....When?

When do you expect the Mini funtanas to be available?

Mike,

I simply can't wait for this plane! Is there any chance that you can give us a link to a video of this thing in action?

Thanks,
Clay

What motor/gearbox/servos/running gear was in this plane. You've sold me on this bugger. I have a 90S waiting t be built too :)

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

I was running an Eflite Park 400 motor, the Eflite Gb that will come with the model, Thunder Power 3 cell 2100ma lipos, JR 281 serervo JR R610 rx.

The Mini Funtana will be out before Christmas BTW. I just left the factory any they are on the way to the US right now.

Does any one know if the wing comes off or not? This plane looks like a lot of fun.

thanks,

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

I am pretty sure it bolts on/off.

RC4 11-23-2004 06:44 AM

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

You can download the manual from Horizon. That should confirm whether it bolts on or not.

There you go then !

MMcConville 11-25-2004 04:16 PM

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

It is a 2-piece wing on an aluminum tube. Has 2 positions as well. The wing ha;ves bolt in place with 1 - 4-40 bolt each from the inside of the fuse.

What covering does it use? Thanks.

Mike,
How do you think the Funtana mini will fly with the e-flight park 400 motor at about 6000ft I am in Colorado Springs

LOOKS GREAT!!

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

Mike,

I'd like to convert it to a dieselized Norvel. Can you give specs? wing span, area, empty weight etc.??

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

Does that combo have the ability to hover at low altitude? Or will it require more motor to do that? Also what ESC was used. I have a mini on order and a Eflite 20 amp ESC will that be enough or should i get a Castle Creations 25 amp?
Jason

Dart373 12-05-2004 06:17 PM

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

It will draw a bunch of amps with a 2025 Himax motor and a big enough prop to hover.

Tadpole 12-08-2004 11:38 AM

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

How much thrust should I need to hover this plane. I know 1:1 will hold it there but what thrust:weight do all of you aim for?

RC4 12-08-2004 07:09 PM

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

Generally, it seems like most 3d pilots think 2:1 is ideal. With a 2:1 thrust to weight ratio, your plane should be able to hover around half throttle. This gives you plenty of punch out power during those low altitude mistakes. I would say as long as you have something better than 1.5:1, that is 'enough' by most people's standards. This would have you hovering around 75% throttle. Still enough reserve power to pull out, but it probably won't 'rocket' out of a hover.

The Mini Funtana is going to weight at least 20 ounces RTF, so you're going to want at least 30 ounces of thrust, probably more depending on the battery, motor and ESC you go with.

RC4 12-08-2004 08:01 PM

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

FYI, the setup I plan to use will give me very close to a 2:1 thrust ratio. According to the Himax web site, the following combination will produce 42.4 ounces of thrust while drawing only 15.2 amps:

Himax 2025-4200 Brushless motor
Phoenix 25 amp ESC
Himax aluminum offset gearbox with 6.6:1 ratio
12x8 prop
3 cell LiPo

I'm a little skeptical about the 15.2 amps estimate, but thats what they say. I'm curious to see what kind of run times I'll get. Probably less than 10 minutes with a 1200 maH 3s1p Lipo. I may try a 3s2p LiPo if it will fit.

Dart373 12-08-2004 08:43 PM

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

Yeah, and that is a super nice setup too. I have a few of these. It is very quiet.

RC4 12-08-2004 09:10 PM

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

Yeah, I really like the Himax motors. Right now I'm running a 2015-4100 with the aluminum 6.6:1 gearbox and 12x6 prop on a 16 ounce 3dfoamy Pitts. My thrust to weight ratio is around 1.6:1. I'm gonna try an 11x7 prop next. Supposedly it will produce about the same amount of thrust, but it will draw less amps for longer run times. We'll see.

Tadpole 12-09-2004 01:05 AM

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

Thanks. I'm also running a himax 2025-4200 with kokam 3s2p 1500 packs. I have a TP 2100 3s pack for the funtana when it comes in.

OK, I can see where the more thrust you have the better off you'll be with 3D, but how much speed should you sacrifice for the thrust. I use motocalc a lot and tend to prop for a medium between high speed and high thrust, but this will be my first lesson in 3D flying. Thanks for any info.

Make sure your TP 2100 in Gen II

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

It is, thanks. 10-12C. Any thoughts on my question?

RC4 12-09-2004 07:15 AM

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

Speed is really not a necessity in any true 3d maneuver. However, if you want to fly some precision maneuvers along with your 3d routine, sacrificing some thrust for a little more speed is okay. The pitch of your prop should definitely be 8 or less, though. Right now I'm running a 12x6 prop. Its definitely got more thrust than speed, but it has enough speed to do fairly nice loops. I'm going to try an 11x7 and see if I lose any stability in a hover. THe Mini Funtana comes with a 12x6 prop, which is probably a good starting point. The 11x7 should give slightly longer run times and a little more speed, though. We'll have to wait and see how it works.

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

I want to add the fillets. Will that be easy to do, releatively that is? Thanks.

MMcConville 12-13-2004 02:49 PM

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

Hmmm. To do them correctly its more like next to impossible. You'd have to change the root rib. I'd just add flat profile fillets to give it the same planform. That should be much easier.

Dart373 12-13-2004 09:50 PM

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

Thats what I wanted, just the looks :)

Why did they not come on this guy? Thats almost a trademark am I right? I am so eager to get mine :)

RC4 12-14-2004 08:03 PM

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

If the fillets are what I think they are, they don't even come on the 40 size do they? I thought only the 90 size Funtana had them. They are a trademark of the Katana, not the Funtana. ;)

Dart373 12-14-2004 09:28 PM

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

I think so. None on the 40, but thats what makes the airplane look good. Thanks.

I checked Horizon's website today and instead of Not Yet Available it said Out of Stock under the mini Funtana. Does that mean they've gotten their first shipment in and sent it out to the LHS? I hope so, I'd like to be building this plane before Christmas!

MMcConville 12-15-2004 02:33 PM

RE: Mini Funtana -electric....When?

Yes. They should be shipping now.
