Default TT Pro 39H engine-Raptor 30 super combo question

i'm aware that this engine can be a pain to tune, but is the engine reliable? or is it known to stall?

They are okay, nothing exceptional. Word of caution, don't hot run it. It'll take out the ring and pffft: there goes the performance and that will make tuing a pita.
I know, I have one.

I know a guy that had one and he had nothing but problems with it. Maybe talk to the hobby shop your going to buy the combo
from and see if they will swap the motor out for an OS motor (my local hobby shop will), it might cost you a little more but I think you will be much happier.

They have a tendency to throw rods and they are a pain in the ear to tune.

Get the OS now then just trade or sell it in when you upgrade to 50. You won't find many people that will actually want to buy a tt39, immensely better resale on the OS

for the engine itself, some people say it's fine. there was a vid of a JR guy using it, the heli was all upgraded, metal head, carbon blade etc, but he kept that engine, and flew it for a competition. and one review of the heli said that TT had it in over 1 min of substained chaos, not sure if thats good because of the tank capacity... but i am going OS in spring. TT engine now. we'll see how bad it is shortly. hoepfully i luck out!

I'm pretty sure it's just the carb that's bad on these. I had the 36 years ago and it lasted about 4 gallons before finally dying. The problem I had with that motor was that if I tuned it to where it would idle, it would lean out too much at mid-range - which is where you hover.

I've heard of people replacing the carb with an OS, and having a really nice engine. I never tried that, just went to an OS 32, then a 37. But you might want to research that on runryder and helifreak. Either way, enjoy the Raptor - it is a sweet flying heli! Oh, BTW don't worry about the cost of glow fuel - these small engines sip the fuel.

do an ebay search for OS 46, I just saw about 5 carbs, but they seemed pricey.

You're wasting your money tinkering with that engine.

Definately.

Do a search, there's a half dozen or more threads about that engine either blowing rods or running inconsistenly that end with "I wish I had just gotten an OS 37 to begin with"

Ditto, I'm one of those people. You have no idea how sensitive the the tt's are to weather changes, you have to chase the needle around all day long if you're out flying for a while.

<- Ex-tt-39 owner, now a proud OS 37 owner.

I'm sorry but talking about needle changes leads me to the new carb argument again. Maybe a $40 carb will make this engine a winner - certainly cheaper than buying another engine.

I'll talk to my hobby dealer and look for more things. Both options i could easily do... one's more expensive. definitley OS something. maybe for my birthday, to save the hassle, i'll prolly just get the engine. it's only a hundred $ difference. would i need a new muffler? or can i use the TT muffler?

The OS 37 needs a good muffler to get the full power from it. Hatori makes a muffler specifically for the motor and really works well. My 37 was a dog with a Century SilentPower muffler, but the Hatori really woke it up.

Ok, thank you.

I just started the engine for the first time. Took about one minute to warm up. Tuned it in about two mins. spent the rest of the time breaking it in like the manual said 'reving it up and letting it idle' six times. only used half a tank. ran fine, tuned fine. could be just the fact it was the first run... we'll see.

I LOVE THE NITRO HELI THING! so much different that an electric. haven't "flown" yet, barely took off. the factory settings for the expo is insane. i blow on the stick the heli tips noticably. gotta change that, and maybe the dual rate thing (i think thats what it is)
LOVE THE RAPTOR!
Thank you all for all your help.

Adjusting the dual rate is fine, just take it in steps when you're ready to disable dual rate. 10% at a time should do it to break you out of dual rate when you're ready.

after about 3 full tanks of fuel on that engine... doesn't seem like anything is wrong at all with it. seems like a pretty good engine. got about 15 mins of flight on 3/4 of a tank, and when i first flew the heli, the weather was FREEZING and yesterday it was rather warm, the weather didnt affect that either.

if your interested in keeping that .39, I will sell u my old .39 for $40.00. never blown, has 3 gallons threw it. but it has a small chipped off piece that is missing on the outside part where the pipe bolts on.
I might even have a pipe for it. and stock muff.
