Default RE: Which Temp Monitor does everyone use

Mornin...

I have seen various temp guns etc... but when speaking to one of the guys at the club about them, he said that the reading from the gun were far to different everytime. He would hover for 2 mins, land check temp and it would be a certain number, then hover for another 2 mins and the temp would change again, he did this a few times..... Maybe he was unlucky, but neverless it was enough to stop me from buying one, well until I see one work correctly anyway....

I have come to rely on the finger in back plate technique. If your finger burns like hell, the engine is too hot, you should be able to hold your finger on the backplate without burning yourself....

Regards
Solo.

If you're talking about a temp gun... I just bought a Craftsman temp gun at my local Sear's Hardware store. Works great. Just watch for the field of view on them when you're pricing them... some are wider than others. I like a narrow field of view so I can hit a certain area easily without putting it right up next to what I'm trying to measure.

If you're talking about an onboard monitor... I've seen them, but don't know much about them... I'd be interested to hear some feedback about them too.

yes I'm looking for something onboard.
I've seen them before where after you land it
not only shows current temp, but you can push a button and get the max temp reached also.

I use a Venom onboard guage on my heli. I have had one that was quite a bit off compared to my temp gun but the one I have now is pretty close. The finger on the backplate of the engine is a great way to check the engine temp also. Once you get used to your engine you will be able to tell when it is running to rich or lean.

I place the sensor on the first fin of the cooling head closest to the cylinder and with the red probe on the opposite site of the exhaust.
