Exactly, how is the glow plug utilized? I know it is used to ignite the fuel for startup, but is that it's only use or does the chemical reaction of the fuel allow it to stay hot? I was thinking more of a diesel concept.....

Yes, it is a catalytic reaction between the alcohol and the platinum, rhodium and other elements that maintain it's glow. The balance of the elements making up the plug wire as well as the diameter of the wire and a few other factors control the heat range of a plug.
